Nutritionist Unveils Key Snacking Insights for Better Health
Dr. Sarah Berry, the chief scientist at Zoe, has released new insights that challenge the common belief that snacking is detrimental to health. Her research, which analyzed the eating habits of over 1,000 individuals, highlights the significant impact of snacking times on overall health.
Timing and Choices Matter
The findings indicate that the timing of snacks plays a crucial role in health outcomes. Dr. Berry noted that individuals who consumed snacks after 9 p.m. tended to experience poorer health results, as reported by Surrey Live. She explained, “What was really interesting was that we found the time of day that you snack matters. If you snack after 9 p.m., we found that it was associated with higher blood pressure, poorer insulin sensitivity, and higher blood cholesterol. That was regardless of the quality of the snack.”
This research suggests that not all snacking is created equal. Dr. Berry emphasized that the act of snacking itself is not inherently harmful; rather, it is the type of snacks chosen and the timing that can lead to adverse health effects. She stated, “If you are hungry between meals and you select healthy snacks, it is not going to have an unfavourable effect on your health.”
Health Implications of Snacking
High cholesterol is a major concern linked to snacking, as it is often referred to as a “silent killer.” This condition typically presents no symptoms but can lead to serious medical issues, including heart attacks and strokes. High cholesterol occurs when there is an excess of fatty substances in the bloodstream, which can block blood vessels if left unmonitored. Contributing factors include a diet high in fatty foods, sedentary lifestyles, obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Genetic factors can also play a role.
Dr. Berry’s research suggests that by opting for healthier snack options and avoiding late-night snacking, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with high cholesterol and other related health issues. This approach not only promotes better health but also allows for guilt-free enjoyment of snacks.
As awareness of the connection between snacking, timing, and health continues to grow, individuals are encouraged to consider both the quality of their snacks and when they consume them. Making informed choices can lead to significant benefits for overall health and well-being.
