Parents Arrested After Five Children Found Locked in Dungeon
The parents of five children have been arrested after authorities discovered the youngsters living in deplorable conditions in their Pennsylvania home. James Russell, 65, and Carly Kahl, 41, face multiple charges, including endangering children and aggravated assault, following a police raid that revealed the children were kept locked in a room described as a “dungeon.”
On March 2, 2024, Pennsylvania State Troopers responded to reports of children living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. Upon entering the home, they found the children, aged between five and 14 years, confined in a room that was reportedly smeared with faeces and had its windows boarded up. The room was infested with fleas and lacked adequate food and sleeping arrangements for the children.
The investigation revealed that the children were often locked in the room during the night and part of the day. The complaint states that the room functioned as a dungeon, equipped with video cameras hardwired to Russell’s bedroom. Police noted that there was no door handle on the inside, preventing the children from escaping their confinement.
Trooper Ally Wilson described the scene as “sickening,” emphasizing the trauma the children endured. After the arrest, Russell allegedly stated he would “not be removing the locks from the bedroom door for any reason,” as reported by local news outlet WPXI.
Following their rescue, the children were placed under the care of Children and Youth Services. Officials have since interviewed them, revealing unsettling accounts of neglect. The children reported that Russell would spend entire days smoking cannabis while neglecting their needs. Additionally, they claimed that Kahl had used a taser on one of the children.
During the search of the premises, authorities discovered a stun gun, a replica firearm, and narcotics. Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele stated at a press conference, “Well, it appears that these children were basically held in captivity in this room.” He condemned the use of devices like stun guns against children, noting that there was no justification for such actions.
The investigation was prompted by a report from a “brave family member” who contacted ChildLine, a child abuse hotline in Pennsylvania. Aubele stressed the importance of community vigilance, stating, “Law enforcement cannot be in every household and every single minute of every day; we need people to come forward and think of these children.”
Both Russell and Kahl have been denied bail and face serious charges that could lead to substantial legal repercussions. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues of child welfare and the responsibility of communities to protect vulnerable individuals.
As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on ensuring the safety and well-being of the children, who are now in a secure environment.
