Politicians Urge UK Prime Minister to Act on Gaza Crisis
A cross-party letter has called on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to recall Parliament in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The letter, signed by several prominent political leaders, emphasizes the urgent need for the UK government to apply pressure on Israel to halt the ongoing conflict.
Among the signatories are Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Alliance Party leader Naomi Long, and SDLP leader Claire Hanna. The letter highlights a coalition of voices, including the SNP’s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn and Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater, who have united to address what they describe as a “man-made catastrophe” affecting civilians in Gaza.
The letter states, “The humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza is both man-made and avoidable.” It condemns the relentless bombardment and the conditions created that are leading to starvation among the civilian population. The document particularly criticizes the blocking of essential supplies, which has resulted in what United Nations agencies are calling a man-made famine.
In addition to recalling Parliament, the letter urges Sir Keir to impose sanctions on Israel and to support a ceasefire alongside meaningful diplomatic efforts aimed at protecting civilians. The leaders also advocate for an immediate cessation of all arms sales to Israel and the initiation of independent investigations into alleged war crimes and acts of genocide in Gaza.
The signatories stress the importance of using the UK’s diplomatic influence to ensure the unimpeded delivery of food, water, and medical supplies to Gaza’s residents. The letter asserts, “The UK’s moral standing and commitment to human rights will be measured by its response to this crisis.”
SDLP leader Claire Hanna emphasized the growing outrage among the public regarding the situation in Gaza, stating, “The situation is deteriorating, with more people dying every day.” She pointed out that the people of Gaza cannot afford to wait for the UK government to take action, criticizing Prime Minister Starmer for not doing enough to counter the Israeli government’s actions.
The letter reflects a significant push from various political factions in the UK, with leaders expressing a collective sense of urgency about the humanitarian situation. They argue that their voices resonate with the despair and anger of constituents who feel neglected by the government’s response.
Previously, Keir Starmer indicated that the UK would recognize a Palestinian state in September, contingent on Israel meeting specific conditions, including agreeing to a ceasefire and advancing toward a two-state solution. As pressures mount from various political leaders, the call to action on Gaza continues to gain momentum across the political landscape in the UK.
