Qatari PM Reaffirms Mediation Role Amid Attacks on Doha

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdelrahman bin Jassim Al Thani confirmed on March 5, 2024, that Qatar will persist with its mediation efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza, despite recent airstrikes targeting the capital, Doha. In a statement delivered on Tuesday evening, he emphasized that Qatar’s diplomatic approach is grounded in the pursuit of regional stability rather than being influenced by the actions of other nations, including Israel.

“Qatari diplomacy is not built on the actions of a state like Israel or any other party,” Al Thani stated. “It is founded on the principle of regional stability, which can only be achieved through diplomatic solutions and intensive diplomatic work, not through wars and conflicts.” He reiterated that mediation is an integral part of Qatar’s diplomatic identity and vowed that nothing would hinder the nation from maintaining this role in the region until stability is attained.

Earlier that day, explosions were reported in Doha, prompting a swift condemnation from the Qatari foreign ministry. The ministry described the airstrikes as a “cowardly” attack aimed at the political leadership of Hamas. Israel confirmed it conducted a targeted strike against what it described as the senior leadership of the Hamas terrorist organization but did not disclose the specific location of the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the strike as a response to “deadly attacks in Jerusalem and Gaza.”

According to Hamas, the airstrike resulted in the deaths of five of its members, including the son of a senior leader, as well as a Qatari security officer. Fortunately, the group reported that none of its negotiating delegation were harmed in the assault. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from various nations in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Syria.
