Ryan Giggs Advocates for Kobbie Mainoo to Stay at Manchester United
Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs has expressed his desire for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to remain with the club as a crucial transfer deadline approaches. The 20-year-old has garnered interest from several clubs, including Napoli and Chelsea, but recent managerial changes at United could impact his future.
Following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month, Michael Carrick has taken over as interim manager until the conclusion of the season. Carrick faces a pressing task ahead of the Manchester derby, with limited time to finalize his squad and address potential departures. Mainoo, who has largely been left out of the starting lineup, appears set to continue his tenure at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season.
Mainoo has only started two matches in the 2025/26 season, both of which resulted in cup exits. Earlier in the term, he declined a loan opportunity, with Napoli showing interest. As he approaches the final year of his contract, discussions regarding an extension have stalled. Currently, Mainoo ranks among the lowest-paid players in the squad, having signed his initial deal in February 2023.
Giggs believes that patience is essential for Mainoo’s development. In an interview with BetSelect, he stated, “As a footballer, you want to play. But I would have more patience because he is only 20, and it is difficult to play centre midfield for Man United.” He further elaborated on the challenges young players face, noting, “You don’t see many really young strikers playing for Man United because it is difficult.”
While acknowledging that Mainoo should be receiving more playing time, Giggs emphasized the importance of patience. “He’s still young, he’s still learning the game. When he does get his chance, he needs to take it. So I’d like to see him stay,” he added.
Michael Carrick’s Vision for Mainoo
Carrick appears to have a clear vision for how to utilize Mainoo effectively within the squad. In a conversation with former United player Rio Ferdinand in September, Carrick described Mainoo as “more of an attacker” rather than a holding midfielder. He stated, “He needs a little bit more freedom. He can defend the higher line, but I think that bit deeper, around the centre-backs, that’s a bit of a different thing completely.”
Carrick’s comments suggest that he sees Mainoo playing in a more advanced role, potentially creating opportunities rather than solely focusing on defensive duties. “I think he’s got a massive future. I really like him; he just needs that patience and a little bit of a break again,” Carrick noted.
As Mainoo continues to compete for a place in the starting lineup, he is likely to vie for minutes alongside Bruno Fernandes. Carrick’s tactical decisions in the coming matches will be crucial, particularly if he opts to pair Fernandes with Mainoo in midfield, allowing Fernandes to adopt a more offensive role.
The upcoming weeks will be pivotal for both Mainoo and Carrick as they navigate the challenges of the season and the impending transfer deadline. With the support of figures like Giggs, Mainoo’s future at Manchester United may hold significant promise, provided he remains patient and seizes his opportunities when they arise.
