Seven Scottish Films Set for Historic Showcase at Sundance 2024

A record number of seven films from Scotland have been selected for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, marking a significant achievement for the country’s film industry. The festival will take place in Park City, Utah, from January 22 to February 1, 2024. Among the selected films, five are supported by Screen Scotland, highlighting the organization’s commitment to fostering local talent and storytelling.

Among the highlights is Louis Paxton’s film, The Incomer, which has been designated as the opening night feature in the Next category. This category is known for showcasing innovative, low-budget independent films that push creative boundaries. Olive Nwosu’s Lady, produced by Alex Polunin in Glasgow, will be featured in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, underscoring the diverse narratives emerging from Scotland.

Another notable entry is Everybody to Kenmure Street, directed by Felipe Bustos Sierra and produced by Ciara Barry. This documentary will compete in the World Documentary Competition. It tells the story of a Home Office dawn raid that ignites a civil resistance movement in Glasgow. Barry expressed excitement about sharing the film with international audiences, stating, “Everybody to Kenmure Street is a hopeful film that celebrates the power of community. In an increasingly divided world where many feel disenfranchised, it allows us to believe in our collective agency to enact change.”

In addition to these titles, Mark Cousins’ documentary, The Story of Documentary, produced by John Archer, will be featured in the special screenings strand. Two other films, Filipiñana, produced by Alex Polunin, and Extra Geography, co-produced by Wendy Griffin, also represent Scotland in this year’s selection.

Set on a Scottish island and filmed in Caithness, The Incomer follows the story of two siblings striving to keep their island free from “incomers.” Paxton expressed pride in his debut feature, saying, “I’m so proud to have made a Scottish comedy, steeped in our history and humour, crafted for a universal audience. I am thrilled to share it with US audiences at Sundance Film Festival 2024.”

Isabel Davis, executive director of Screen Scotland, emphasized the importance of this selection, stating, “Every one of these titles is entertaining, urgent and creatively uncompromising. It’s deeply rewarding to see Scotland’s creative achievements reflected in Sundance’s programme. Supporting original storytelling— from early development through to established careers— is a core part of Screen Scotland’s strategy.”

Culture Secretary Angus Robertson also voiced support for the filmmakers, saying, “I am really pleased to see these films be selected for the Sundance Film Festival, showcasing the incredible breadth of creativity in Scotland. The Scottish Government is committed to building on the exceptional growth of Scotland’s screen sector.”
