Six Injured in Warwickshire Dog Attack; Man Arrested
Six individuals were injured during a dog attack in Warwickshire, England, on September 11, 2023, which also left a pet dog wounded. The incident occurred shortly before midday in the Polesworth area, prompting a swift response from Warwickshire Police. Initial reports indicated that two dogs, believed to be an XL Bully Cross and a French Bulldog, were roaming freely on Park Street.
As the dogs attacked members of the public and another dog, several brave bystanders intervened. They attempted to restrain the aggressive animals, ultimately managing to contain them in a garden and a van until officers arrived. Unfortunately, during the rescue efforts, six people sustained minor injuries, including bites and puncture wounds. The condition of the pet dog that was originally attacked remains unclear.
Following the incident, police confiscated both dogs and placed them in custody. A 49-year-old man from Tamworth was arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control, causing injury. He has since been released on bail until the end of November while investigations continue.
Community Response and Investigation
Inspector Andi Gibbons of the North Warwickshire Safer Neighbourhood Team commended the public for their quick action. “Thank you to those who called 999, and to those brave members of the public who stepped in to help—they should be incredibly proud of what they did,” he stated. He acknowledged that the incident caused significant concern within the community and urged residents to remain calm.
Inspector Gibbons confirmed that the injuries sustained by the six individuals were largely superficial, including bite marks, scratches, and puncture wounds. Some victims received stitches at local hospitals. He added, “We can also confirm that two dogs are being kept safely in police kennels.”
In an effort to reassure the public, police have increased their presence in the area since the attack. Officers will continue to patrol the vicinity, and residents are encouraged to approach them with any concerns. “We’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area between midday and 12:30 PM yesterday or anyone who has information that can help,” Inspector Gibbons said. Those with information should reference incident number 121 of September 11, 2023.
Legislation on Dog Ownership
The incident comes in the context of recent legislative changes regarding dog ownership in England and Wales. As of February 1, 2024, owning or possessing an XL Bully dog became a criminal offence unless a valid Certificate of Exemption is held. This ban was implemented to address a rise in fatal dog attacks involving the breed.
Owners must register their dogs under the exemption scheme, which closed to new applications at the end of 2024. The authorities remain vigilant about enforcing these regulations to enhance public safety.
The investigation into the Warwickshire dog attack continues, and officials are committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this distressing event.
