Trump Reflects on Nobel Peace Prize Snub During Meeting with Netanyahu
Former US President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment over not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize during a recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two leaders convened at Mar-a-Lago to discuss a ceasefire plan for Gaza, where Trump was inadvertently caught on a hot mic voicing his sentiments regarding the prestigious award.
In a video clip shared online, Trump can be heard lamenting, “35 years of fighting and they stopped. Do I get credit for it? No.” His comments suggest he was about to discuss the Nobel Peace Prize before being interrupted. Trump continued, referencing his diplomatic efforts, stating, “How about India and Pakistan? So I did 8 of them.” This remark highlights his belief that his contributions to peace negotiations have gone unrecognized.
During the meeting, Netanyahu described their discussions as “very, very productive.” He praised Trump’s achievements in the Middle East, noting their collaborative efforts. “He’s achieved remarkable things in the Middle East because we worked together,” Netanyahu said. He acknowledged that they sometimes have differing opinions but emphasized their ability to resolve disagreements.
Netanyahu Announces Honor for Trump
In a significant gesture, Netanyahu confirmed that Trump would receive the Israeli Peace Prize, the highest civilian honor awarded in Israel. “In almost our 80 years, we’ve never awarded it to a non-Israeli,” Netanyahu stated. He underscored Trump’s “tremendous contributions to Israel and the Jewish people” as the basis for this honor.
The leaders also addressed the ongoing issue of Hamas disarmament during their discussions. Trump warned of severe consequences if Hamas fails to comply, stating, “Horrible. That’s going to be really, really bad for them.” He expressed his desire to avoid further conflict, mentioning that an agreement had been made for Hamas to disarm.
Trump additionally voiced concerns regarding Iran’s potential missile program. He indicated a preference against deploying US bombers to the Middle East, stating, “If they are, we’re going to have no choice but very quickly to eradicate that build-up.” He cautioned that, based on reports, Iran may be developing weapons outside previously targeted sites.
The meeting between Trump and Netanyahu reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region and highlights the complexities of international relations, particularly concerning peace initiatives and military readiness.
