US Freezes Minnesota Child Care Funds Amid Fraud Investigation
The United States has halted all child care payments to Minnesota following serious allegations of extensive fraud involving childcare centers in the state. This decision was confirmed by Jim O’Neill, Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, amid an ongoing investigation sparked by claims of a sophisticated scam targeting taxpayer funds.
The investigation originated from a video posted by YouTuber Nick Shirley, who alleged that Somali-run childcare centers in Minneapolis were involved in fraudulent activities, estimating losses to exceed $110 million. In a statement shared on social media platform X, O’Neill outlined the actions taken in response to these alarming claims. He stated, “We have frozen all child care payments to the state of Minnesota,” highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Federal Actions and Investigations
In addition to freezing payments, O’Neill activated the “Defend the Spend” system for all Administration for Children and Families (ACF) payments. This new requirement mandates justification and proof of receipt before any funds are disbursed. O’Neill also called for a comprehensive audit from Tim Walz, Minnesota’s Democratic Governor, demanding scrutiny of attendance records, licenses, and past inspections of the childcare centers implicated in the fraud.
The federal government allocates approximately $185 million annually to Minnesota’s childcare programs, aimed at supporting roughly 19,000 children. Alex Adams, Assistant Secretary for the ACF, emphasized the impact of fraud on vulnerable populations, stating, “Any dollar stolen by fraudsters is stolen from those children.”
State Response and Ongoing Investigation
The investigation has been described as “massive” by Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Human Services (DHS), who shared updates on the progress as federal agents began questioning business operators. Kash Patel, Director of the FBI, noted that resources have been significantly increased in Minnesota, warning that the cases under review may represent only “the tip of a very large iceberg.” He emphasized the potential consequences for individuals involved, including denaturalization and deportation.
While state officials have defended their actions, asserting that the centers featured in Shirley’s video had been inspected recently without any findings of fraud, Walz praised Minnesota’s diverse community and the contributions of its large Somali population. “We’re committed to holding bad actors accountable,” O’Neill asserted, reinforcing the federal commitment to prosecute any individuals involved in fraudulent activities to the fullest extent of the law.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that taxpayer funds are properly allocated and protected, fostering accountability within the childcare system in Minnesota.
