US Military Operation Captures Nicolas Maduro Amid Charges
Nicolas Maduro, the President of Venezuela, and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the Southern District of New York on serious charges including “Narco-Terrorism Conspiracy” and “Cocaine Importation Conspiracy.” According to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, they also face allegations related to the possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Bondi stated that they will soon confront “the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.”
This significant development occurs after a military operation conducted by the United States, which reportedly resulted in Maduro’s capture and subsequent removal from Venezuela. The operation took place early on a Saturday morning, as announced via social media by US President Donald Trump. During the action, multiple explosions were reported in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital. The Maduro government condemned the operation, labeling it an attack on civilian and military installations.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau characterized the operation as a transformative moment for Venezuela, declaring that “the tyrant is gone.” He shared his statement on social media shortly after the military action. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinforced this narrative, indicating that Maduro’s regime was not the legitimate government of Venezuela.
Following the operation, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez addressed the nation, asserting that the government was unaware of the whereabouts of Maduro and Flores. She demanded “proof of life,” emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding their situation. Rodriguez, as per Venezuelan law, is next in line to assume power, although no formal confirmation of her assuming leadership has been made.
Nicolas Maduro previously faced indictment in March 2020, charged with conspiracy related to narco-terrorism. His last public appearance occurred on state television just days before the operation, where he met with a delegation of Chinese officials in Caracas.
