US Reduces Troop Presence in Romania Amid Rising Tensions
The United States has announced plans to reduce its troop presence in Romania, a move that raises concerns about security in Eastern Europe amid ongoing tensions with Russia. This decision will affect forces stationed at the strategically crucial Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, which is located close to Ukraine and serves as a key buffer against potential Russian aggression.
Romania’s defense ministry confirmed the troop reduction, stating that the adjustment is part of a broader reassessment of the US military’s global posture. According to the ministry, approximately 1,000 US troops will remain in Romania following the reduction. The ministry emphasized that NATO has bolstered its presence in the region, allowing the US to modify its military footprint without compromising overall security.
Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu sought to clarify the situation, asserting that this change should not be viewed as a withdrawal. He explained that it involves “the cessation of the rotation of a brigade” that had units deployed across several NATO countries, including Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Hungary. Meanwhile, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak mentioned that he has yet to receive any information regarding a reduction in US forces stationed in Poland.
This announcement comes amid heightened tensions in Europe, particularly following a series of Russian incursions into NATO airspace. In early October, NATO forces intercepted an unidentified drone near a base utilized by US troops in Estonia, which is situated less than 30 miles from the Russian border. Last month, three Russian MiG-31 fighters briefly entered Estonian airspace, further escalating concerns about regional security.
Romania has also experienced multiple violations of its airspace in recent years, with the latest reported on September 13. As the conflict in Ukraine persists, strengthening troop levels and command capabilities around the Black Sea has become increasingly important for NATO member states.
Earlier this year, during a visit to the NATO military base in Smârdan, military exercises known as Steadfast Dart showcased the alliance’s commitment to protecting its eastern flank. This extensive land, sea, and air exercise was the most significant demonstration of NATO’s Allied Reaction Force in 2025, although US forces did not participate, raising questions among NATO officials about their role in the evolving landscape.
US military involvement has historically played a pivotal role in European security for over 75 years. However, priorities have shifted since the administration of former President Donald Trump, which called for increased military spending from NATO allies. Earlier this year, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that the focus of security efforts is no longer solely on NATO, thus casting doubt on the longstanding security guarantees provided to European nations.
As the situation develops, the implications of the US troop reduction in Romania will be closely monitored by both NATO and regional allies. The ongoing challenges posed by Russian military activities underscore the need for robust defense strategies in Eastern Europe.
