A recent visit by YouTuber Danny, known for his channel Honest Places, has brought attention to the small Scottish town of Castle Douglas. During his exploration, he discovered both the charm and the surprising affordability of homes in this isolated community located in Dumfries and Galloway.

Danny’s journey was part of a trip to Belfast, and he decided to explore a nearby town before catching the ferry. He expressed his curiosity about the area, stating, “So we thought we would go to a random town in Scotland near the ferry and see what’s kicking off basically, see what the craic is.”

Castle Douglas, once celebrated as Scotland’s “food capital,” was highlighted in a recent feature that praised its culinary offerings, including a well-regarded fish and chip shop and inviting pubs. Upon arrival, Danny was drawn to the local pubs, particularly Sulwath Brewery. He described it as a “proper locals boozer” and appreciated the “warm welcome” he received from the patrons.

One local, who mistakenly assumed Danny’s striped green and white shirt was a nod to Celtic FC, remarked on the town’s appeal. He mentioned that Castle Douglas is a “good spot” with “decent pubs” and noted he had “no complaints.” Following his visit, viewers commented positively on his video, with remarks highlighting the friendliness of the locals.

Danny’s next stop was Monty’s Sports Bar, where he was impressed by the establishment’s ambiance. “That’s a beautiful pub. Look at this. Christ, this looks good. I’m going to get a pint of Tennent’s whilst in Scotland, do you know what I mean?” he exclaimed. His interactions with the locals continued to be positive, leading him to conclude, “Tell you what, everyone is sound in there.”

While exploring the town, Danny paused outside Galbraith estate agents, where he was astonished by the local property prices. He exclaimed to his nearly 100,000 subscribers, “Look at how cheap you can get a house here in Scotland,” pointing out a three-bedroom cottage listed at just £230,000. He remarked on the affordability, saying, “That is ridiculous that. £230,000. That is mad.” He added that anyone wanting to move to the area might need to work from home to take advantage of such opportunities.

His final stop was the Legion Scotland branch club, where he enjoyed what he described as the best pint of Guinness of the day. Throughout his evening in Castle Douglas, Danny noted the absence of younger patrons in the pubs, commenting, “How many 18-year-olds have you seen in these pubs? It is half seven on a Friday. When you are in an isolated Scottish town you’ve got to move on haven’t you.”

Community Reactions and Reflections

After posting his video titled “the SHOCKING reality of SCOTTISH remote towns,” viewers responded with a mix of nostalgia and appreciation for the town’s unique character. One viewer remarked, “Scottish scenery just makes everything seem better,” while another shared memories of their own experiences in Castle Douglas, calling it “one of the weirdest places” they had visited.

Danny’s exploration of Castle Douglas highlights not only the charm of small-town life in Scotland but also the potential for affordable housing in less populated areas. As he continues to share his travels, his insights into communities like Castle Douglas resonate with viewers seeking both adventure and a deeper understanding of life in remote locations.
