Michelle Tsiakkas Opens Up About Jamie Borthwick Before BBC Exit
Michelle Tsiakkas, a star from Strictly Come Dancing, has shared her experiences working with Jamie Borthwick prior to his unexpected dismissal from the BBC. Borthwick, known for his role as Jay Brown in EastEnders, faced serious allegations after reportedly using a slur against disabled individuals while on set for the dance competition. The incident led to his suspension and subsequent termination after a 19-year career with the soap opera.
Earlier this month, the BBC confirmed that Borthwick would not be returning to EastEnders. This announcement followed his suspension for using offensive language while filming Strictly Come Dancing in September 2023. The BBC described Borthwick’s comments as “entirely unacceptable,” affirming they do not align with the organization’s values.
In a recently resurfaced podcast episode from 2024, Tsiakkas spoke candidly about the bond she developed with Borthwick during their time together on the dance floor. During the conversation on the Sunday Mirror‘s Invite Only podcast, Borthwick expressed that he had formed a “fantastic bond” with Tsiakkas, a sentiment she echoed, stating she had gained a “really close friend.”
Tsiakkas elaborated on the intensity of their partnership, noting the physical and mental challenges they faced together. “When you go through such an intense experience together, there’s a lot of pressure, a lot of work, so it’s physically and mentally tiring,” she explained. She emphasized that the highs and lows of the competition created a unique connection, often bringing them closer than long-standing friendships.
Reflecting on their dynamic, Tsiakkas described being unable to remain angry with Borthwick, as he consistently made her laugh, likening him to a “little brother.” This playful rapport allowed them to share an honest and open dialogue, as both dancers maintained a strong work ethic while enjoying their time together.
The fallout from Borthwick’s comments has prompted significant media attention. Following the incident, he was spotted looking “downcast and unshaven” while running errands near his residence. Reports indicate that he was informed of his dismissal around this time.
In response to the controversy, Borthwick issued an apology in June 2023, expressing regret for the offense caused by his words. He acknowledged that he did not fully grasp the derogatory term he had used and its implications. “I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused,” he stated. Borthwick further clarified that his “regrettable actions” do not reflect his true character or views.
The repercussions of Borthwick’s comments have reignited discussions surrounding language and inclusivity within the entertainment industry. As the BBC continues to uphold its standards, the incident has highlighted the importance of accountability and understanding in public discourse.
As fans reflect on Borthwick’s contributions to EastEnders and his time on Strictly Come Dancing, Tsiakkas’ insights provide a glimpse into the personal connections forged through shared experiences in the high-pressure environment of reality television.
