NLC Demands Urgent Wage Adjustments Amid Rising Living Costs
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on federal and state governments to urgently implement a Wage Award and a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for all workers. This request comes as living costs in Nigeria escalate drastically, largely influenced by global economic factors and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
In a statement issued by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the organization highlighted the severe financial strain faced by millions of Nigerian workers. The NLC noted that prices for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) have surged to between N1,170 and N1,300 per litre, significantly impacting transportation costs and contributing to rampant food inflation. The current wage levels, according to the NLC, are insufficient and have become mere “stipends of starvation.”
NLC’s Demands for Economic Relief
The NLC outlined several urgent demands aimed at alleviating the economic burden on workers. These include:
1. An immediate Wage Award and COLA for all workers to address the soaring cost of living.
2. An expansion and overhaul of Cash Transfers aimed at ensuring transparency and reaching the most vulnerable populations, with increased amounts to match inflation.
3. Immediate tax reliefs for workers, including the cessation of regressive taxes on low-income earners, particularly the proposed taxation on the informal economy.
The labor organization expressed strong discontent regarding the taxation of minimum wage earners, deeming it an act of extortion. Furthermore, the NLC urged the federal government to establish a timeline for the operationalization of all public refineries, warning against the dangers of sabotaging these facilities to create monopolistic control over fuel supplies.
Economic Accountability and Worker Welfare
The NLC’s statement emphasized the critical connection between worker welfare and national economic stability. It stated, “When a worker cannot afford to go to work, the economy stops. When a family cannot afford three meals a day, society sits on a keg of gunpowder.” The organization insists that the government must take decisive action to prevent widespread suffering among its citizens.
The anticipated oil windfall of approximately N30 trillion from the ongoing Middle East conflict has raised concerns within the NLC about the potential misuse of these funds. The NLC has urged that these earnings should be invested in the welfare of Nigerian citizens rather than disappearing as previous funds have. It referenced a forecast by the Nigeria Economic Summit Group that outlines the expected financial benefits from the crisis.
The NLC concluded with a call for the government to engage sincerely with workers and the broader community, stating that using external conflicts as justification for further impoverishing Nigerians is unacceptable. “The primary duty of government is to ensure the welfare of the citizenry,” the statement declared. The NLC’s demands reflect a growing urgency for action to support workers facing unprecedented economic challenges.
