EU Ambassador Urges Media Institutions to Avoid Political Pressure

The European Union is closely monitoring the media landscape in Montenegro and has called for public institutions to refrain from exerting political pressure. This statement comes from Johan Satler, the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, in response to a letter from leading editors of Montenegrin media outlets. The letter, dated October 7, 2025, addressed concerns regarding false accusations linking media organizations to organized crime.
In his reply, Ambassador Satler expressed gratitude to the editors of various media platforms, including Televizija E, ETV, M portal, Antena M, Analitika, and Standard, for bringing these issues to light. He emphasized that ensuring a safe environment for journalists, free from harassment, political pressure, censorship, or persecution, is crucial for upholding the rule of law. This principle is also a fundamental aspect of Montenegro’s efforts to join the EU.
Ambassador Satler reiterated that the fight against high-level corruption and organized crime remains a cornerstone of Montenegro’s accession negotiations. He stated that the results achieved in these areas must be continuously improved to prevent a perception of impunity.
Furthermore, the Ambassador underscored the expectation that the judiciary operates within legal frameworks and based on solid evidence in all criminal cases, thereby ensuring legal certainty.
Media Responsibility and Judicial Independence
Satler highlighted that all media entities bear the responsibility to adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards. He stressed the importance of respecting media freedom, judicial independence, and impartiality, in line with European and international standards.
The Ambassador also pointed out that public institutions should abstain from any inappropriate political influence, which includes harsh public criticism and unfounded accusations against representatives of civil society, the media, and the judiciary.
In conclusion, Ambassador Satler stated that the EU would continue to monitor the situation closely and welcomed any further information the media representatives wished to share on this critical matter. This ongoing dialogue underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting media freedom and judicial integrity in Montenegro.
