A 68-year-old grandfather, Gerard McAliece, underwent a transformative surgery to correct a severe case of nose growth, a condition known as Rhinophyma. The surgery, conducted at Ever Clinic in Glasgow, has dramatically improved his quality of life, allowing him to kiss his wife, Carol McAliece, for the first time in years.

Gerard first noticed changes to his nose six years ago when it began to grow uncontrollably. The condition, caused by the excessive proliferation of sebaceous glands, led to significant swelling and deformity. The tissue on his nose expanded to such an extent that it obstructed his mouth, making it impossible for him to kiss Carol.

Reflecting on his experience, Gerard shared, “It just kept growing and growing and, as much as possible, I tried to ignore it.” He expressed concern about how children reacted to his appearance, particularly at his grandchildren’s birthday parties. “I used to really worry at my grandchildren’s birthday parties – what do their wee pals think?”

Initially, Gerard sought help through the National Health Service (NHS), but his concerns were dismissed when a locum doctor suggested that as long as he could breathe, there was no problem. “I didn’t push it. I am not a pushy person and I don’t expect things to be done for me,” he said, downplaying his situation.

Recognizing the impact of his condition on their relationship, Carol took the initiative to contact Ever Clinic after reading about their successful treatments for Rhinophyma. During his consultation, Gerard felt reassured when the staff acknowledged the severity of his case. “They said it was the biggest job that they had ever tackled and that it was going to be a real challenge, but that, hopefully, they would be able to do it in one session, which they did,” he recounted.

The surgery, led by Rhinophyma specialist Dr. Cormac Convery, lasted over four hours and involved extensive removal of excess tissue. Gerard described the experience as surreal, stating, “I had no idea of time during the surgery.”

The results have been nothing short of remarkable. Gerard noted, “The result has been fantastic. It has totally turned my life around. Carol says that I am back to being the man that I used to be.” He has started engaging in social activities again, enjoying meals out and spending time with friends.

In a reflection on his newfound confidence, Gerard emphasized the importance of addressing similar health issues without delay. “If there is anyone out there in the position I was in, my advice to them would be – don’t wait. Just do it.”

Jonathan Toye, managing director at Ever Clinic, highlighted the challenges faced by patients seeking treatment for Rhinophyma through the NHS. “Gerard was easily the most advanced case of Rhinophyma we’ve seen at Ever Clinic. Unfortunately, he struggled to find the help he needed through the NHS, and we see this far too often,” Toye stated. He expressed pride in the clinic’s team and the positive impact of their work, noting, “Hearing Gerard talk about how it’s changed his life has been a proud moment for all of us.”

Gerard’s story underscores the importance of seeking appropriate medical care and the potential for transformative outcomes in cases where patients feel their concerns are overlooked.
