UTMB World Series Invites Runners to Experience Chihuahua’s Trails

The UTMB World Series recently hosted an exhilarating event in Chihuahua, Mexico, drawing over 2,000 runners from 38 countries. This gathering not only celebrated the sport of ultrarunning but also honored the rich cultural heritage of the Raramuri, the indigenous people of the region known for their exceptional long-distance running capabilities.

The Raramuri, often referred to as “those with light feet,” have a long-standing tradition of running that has gained global recognition, particularly following the publication of Christopher McDougall’s book, Born To Run. Their unique lifestyle, marked by endurance running and the wearing of traditional attire and Huarache sandals, has inspired athletes worldwide. This year’s UTMB Chihuahua event showcased the stunning landscapes of the Sierra Madre Occidental and the breathtaking Copper Canyon, a region defined by its dramatic topography.

Challenging Courses and Competitive Spirit

The UTMB event in Chihuahua featured races ranging from 8 kilometers to 100 miles, appealing to a diverse group of participants beyond the hardcore ultra enthusiasts. All courses included challenging and technical routes with significant elevation gains, testing even the most seasoned athletes. Notable routes passed through the Divisadero Station of the Chepe Train, as well as the communities of Huerachi and Mogotavo, offering participants a chance to marvel at the towering rock formations and the majestic beauty of the canyons.

The highlight of the weekend was the Raramuri 100-mile race, which included an impressive vertical gain of nearly 8,000 metres. Local runner Mauro Martin Quimare made a significant impact by running 30 miles to reach the starting line, where he initially set a competitive pace. Ultimately, it was Canadian Victor Larocque who emerged victorious, achieving his first win in a 100-mile race after overtaking the lead with only a marathon distance remaining.

Over 130 Raramuri runners participated in various races throughout the weekend, showcasing their remarkable endurance and connection to the land. The event not only provided an opportunity for competition but also served as a cultural exchange, bringing together diverse running communities in celebration of the terrain and traditions of Chihuahua.

Exploring the Natural Wonders of Chihuahua

Beyond the races, participants had the chance to explore the majestic landscapes of the Copper Canyon. Known locally as Barrancas del Cobre, the canyon system covers an area of 25,000 square miles and is recognized for its breathtaking depth and stunning views, making it an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts. The region is home to the Basaseachic Falls, the tallest year-round waterfalls in Mexico, which stands at over 240 meters high.

Visitors can also marvel at the Cusarare Falls, which, though smaller at 30 meters high, offers equally captivating beauty. Hikes through the area reveal dramatic waterfalls, ancient rock formations, and remnants of historical cave dwellings, providing an immersive experience in this natural wonder.

To conclude the trip, participants could take the Chepe Express, a scenic train ride from Creel to Los Mochis, which winds through the Copper Canyon and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
