Woman Transforms Health by Losing 7st through Lifestyle Changes

Nicola Graham, a 54-year-old from the North East of England, successfully reversed her high blood pressure and palpitations by losing an impressive 7st through lifestyle changes rather than weight loss medications. Struggling with her weight for years, Nicola embarked on her transformative journey after experiencing the onset of menopause and the emotional toll of losing her father in December 2023.
Weighing nearly 17st and feeling invisible, Nicola decided to take action in January 2024 by joining her local Slimming World group. With a commitment to nutritious eating and regular exercise, she has since transformed not only her body but her entire outlook on life. “I was completely unprepared for how the menopause affected me – it changed everything,” she said. “My confidence was fading fast, but with the support of my Slimming World group, I began to feel ‘seen’ again.”
Initially, Nicola faced challenges with her weight after a childhood spent competing in swimming. Stopping competitive swimming led to increased portions and a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in a steady weight gain. By her early twenties, she was wearing size 20 clothes and struggling with health issues, including high blood pressure and joint pain.
Her journey to health took a pivotal turn when she and her husband, Ian Graham, made a spontaneous decision to marry in September 2024, envisioning a dream wedding in a whitewashed chapel on a private island in Kos. “Losing my dad was one of the main motivators to join Slimming World. He’d be so proud of what I’ve achieved,” she reflected.
The weight loss journey led Nicola to shed an incredible 7st, dropping from a size 20 to a size 10. Her determination was evident from the start, as she lost 5lbs in her first week with Slimming World. “That was a lightbulb moment for me,” she stated. The support from her Slimming World group and her consultant, Vicky Robson, became crucial in maintaining her focus and motivation.
Nicola’s story aligns with findings from a Slimming World survey of 2,472 participants, which highlighted that 79% of members experiencing menopause successfully lost weight through healthy lifestyle modifications. The survey also revealed that women reported challenges such as exhaustion (51%), concentration issues (38%), and poor sleep quality (37%) during perimenopause.
Despite entering perimenopause at 52, Nicola found strength in community support. “I’ve learned that I need the support of others around me,” she explained. “I love my group; we support each other both in group and through our Facebook page.”
Dr. Amanda Avery, health and research consultant dietitian at Slimming World, emphasized the importance of tailored support during menopause. “The programme empowers members to manage symptoms through healthier eating and regular activity,” she noted. “Our research shows weight loss is possible during the menopause.”
Nicola’s remarkable transformation is a testament to the power of lifestyle changes. She has embraced healthier eating habits, trading in her previous diet of fast food and rich takeaways for nutritious meals that include overnight oats, fresh salads, and low-fat dinners. “I feel strong, empowered, and I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved,” she concluded.
In recognition of her journey, Vicky Robson praised Nicola’s dedication, saying, “She is a true inspiration to everyone in our group. Her incredible 7st weight loss during the menopause shows what’s possible with determination and support.”
For those interested in joining a Slimming World group, Vicky runs sessions on Tuesday evenings at 19:00, Wednesdays at 09:30, and Saturday mornings at 08:00 and 09:30. For more information, visit slimmingworld.co.uk or call Vicky at 07496 968689.
Nicola’s journey reflects both personal resilience and the potential for positive change through community support, making her story a powerful example for others facing similar challenges.
