Faroe Islands Women Challenge Montenegro in Thrilling Handball Match

In a gripping handball match held at the Viđ Tjarnir arena, the Faroe Islands women’s team faced Montenegro in the second qualifier for the 2026 European Championship. The game ended with a score of 32-26 in favor of Montenegro, showcasing a competitive spirit from both teams.
The match attracted a crowd of 3,000 spectators and was officiated by referees Janc and Joi-Sug from Germany. Early in the game, the Faroe Islands took the lead, scoring four goals to Montenegro’s one in the sixth minute. Key player Armel Atingre made three crucial saves during this period, preventing the opposition from capitalizing on their opportunities.
Despite a strong start, the Faroe Islands struggled to maintain their momentum. Montenegro, led by a formidable backline and dynamic wing players, quickly regained control. The standout performance of Tatjana Brnović in goal, who saved two penalties in the final six minutes, played a significant role in stifling the Faroe Islands’ offensive efforts.
As the match progressed into the second half, the Faroe Islands attempted to disrupt Montenegro’s defense with intricate plays involving their pivots. However, Montenegro’s defensive strategy proved impenetrable, allowing them to extend their lead significantly by halftime, which ended at 18-12.
Montenegro’s performance was reflective of their previous match, where they triumphed over Portugal. They demonstrated tactical proficiency and resilience, managing to withstand the early pressure exerted by the home team. In the 14th minute, Montenegro had established an 11-7 lead, effectively neutralizing the Faroe Islands’ initial offensive strategy.
The Faroe Islands made notable efforts to recover, but a series of technical errors—totaling 17 mistakes—hampered their comeback. Montenegro capitalized on these lapses, launching a decisive 6-1 scoring run that ultimately sealed the victory.
This match was crucial for both teams as they vie for qualification in the upcoming European Championship. The Faroe Islands will need to regroup and address their technical shortcomings as they move forward in the tournament. Montenegro, on the other hand, will look to build on this win to solidify their position in the qualifiers.
