Local Authorities Remove Centuries-Old Tree During Reconstruction

During the ongoing reconstruction of Ulica slobode in Podgorica, a decades-old tree was cut down on the morning of October 27, 2023. The tree, approximately fifteen meters tall, was removed as part of essential work on underground installations, according to the Agency for Construction and Development of Podgorica, the project’s investor. This decision has sparked significant backlash from environmental activists, who argue that it reflects negligence rather than necessity.
The reconstruction project, which began on August 25, 2023, spans the section of Ulica slobode from Bulevar Ivana Crnojevića to Hercegovčka Street. The agency has previously stated that important installations, including electrical power, sewerage, and water lines, must run through the area where the tree stood. They emphasized that preserving the tree would require altering the project, thus delaying construction efforts.
Environmental concerns surrounding the removal have been vocalized by activists who believe that the decision to cut down the tree is indicative of a broader societal issue. Vuk Vujisić, a civic activist, urged local authorities, including Mayor Saša Mujović, to protect the tree, suggesting alternatives that would preserve it, similar to the approach taken with a historic plane tree in Trg Balšića.
Azra Vuković, Executive Director of the environmental non-governmental organization Green Home, criticized the removal as a pattern of irresponsibility. She stated, “Cutting down yet another tree that has adorned Ulica slobode for the past thirty years unfortunately is nothing new and reflects a common behavior we witness daily in this country.”
Activists like Vuk Iković from the Preokret Movement expressed their disappointment over the tree’s removal, noting its historical significance. “This tree survived World War II and the complete destruction of Podgorica but could not withstand the actions of those meant to protect it,” Iković remarked on social media.
As part of the reconstruction plans, the Agency has committed to planting a new row of thirteen evergreen oak trees along the street, which they assert will enhance the area’s greenery. The total cost of the Ulica slobode reconstruction is estimated at around €790,000, with an expected completion date of November 30, 2023.
The removal of the tree has reignited discussions about urban development and environmental responsibility, prompting many to call for a more sustainable approach to city planning in Podgorica. As the project progresses, the balance between urban development and environmental conservation remains a critical topic among residents and officials alike.
