Cyprus President Seeks Immediate Reunification Talks for Island

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has expressed a strong willingness to resume negotiations aimed at reunifying the island of Cyprus, stating he is prepared to begin discussions as soon as next week. This statement follows the recent election of pro-EU leader Tufan Erhüman in Northern Cyprus, who has advocated for a federal model of reunification. The last round of United Nations-backed negotiations concluded in 2017, making this renewed interest particularly significant.
In an exclusive interview with Euronews, Christodoulides emphasized the importance of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation as a pathway to resolving the longstanding division between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island. He remarked, “I believe this is a positive development,” referring to Erhüman’s election, which has reignited hopes for meaningful dialogue. The President firmly rejected the idea of a two-state solution, a concept recently proposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Historical Context and Current Challenges
The division of Cyprus dates back to 1974, following a Greek military coup that aimed to unify the island with Greece. This led to a Turkish invasion, resulting in the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognized by Turkey, while the southern part of the island is a member of the European Union. Numerous attempts by the UN to mediate a resolution have so far failed, leaving the island split for nearly five decades.
Christodoulides also highlighted the urgency of EU enlargement, stating that the bloc is at risk of losing its geopolitical influence if it does not follow through on its promises to candidate countries, particularly in the western Balkans. “Enlargement is one of the most important geopolitical tools of the European Union,” he stated, indicating that failure to act could lead to a disengagement from the EU among these nations.
Regional Influence and International Plans
As Cyprus prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the EU in January 2024, bringing the EU closer to the Middle East will be a key focus for Christodoulides. He aims to leverage Cyprus’s unique position as the only EU member state in the region to facilitate the implementation of Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. This initiative is seen as vital in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis and stabilizing the area.
Christodoulides has proposed a six-point plan that includes humanitarian aid delivery, the screening of dual-use goods, and the training of Palestinian security forces. Additionally, he has expressed interest in establishing Cyprus’s role in an international stabilization force, which would comprise both Arab and international partners.
On the topic of the conflict in Ukraine, Christodoulides conveyed a more cautious outlook, indicating that he does not foresee an end to the war during Cyprus’s presidency. He emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine in response to the ongoing Russian invasion. In a show of solidarity, he plans to visit Ukraine in early December, just weeks before Cyprus takes on its EU leadership role.
Christodoulides’s proactive approach to both regional and international issues reflects a diplomatic strategy aimed at enhancing Cyprus’s role in global affairs, while also addressing internal challenges. The upcoming months will be critical as the nation navigates these complex dynamics, particularly the ongoing discussions regarding the reunification of the island.
