June Lockhart, the acclaimed actress celebrated for her roles in iconic television series such as Lassie and Lost in Space, has died at the age of 100. She passed away on October 19, 2023, due to natural causes, surrounded by her daughter, June Elizabeth, and granddaughter, Christianna, as reported by People.

A family spokesperson, Lyle Gregory, who was a close friend of Lockhart for 40 years, shared with the Associated Press that she remained engaged with the world until the end. “She was very happy up until the very end, reading the New York Times and LA Times every day. It was very important to her to stay focused on the news of the day,” Gregory noted.

Early Life and Career Milestones

Born in New York City in 1925, Lockhart was the daughter of actors Gene and Kathleen Lockhart. She began her illustrious career at just eight years old, making her stage debut in a Metropolitan Opera production of Peter Ibbetson. Her first film appearance followed in 1938 with a role in A Christmas Carol, where she played Bob Cratchit’s daughter.

Lockhart’s Broadway journey included notable performances in For Love or Money in 1947 and The Grand Prize in 1955. Her role in For Love or Money earned her a special Tony Award in 1948 for outstanding performance by a newcomer.

Transitioning to television in 1949, she made guest appearances on shows like Hallmark Hall of Fame, Shirley Temple’s Storybook, and Gunsmoke. Over nearly eight decades, Lockhart’s impressive resume included memorable roles in Petticoat Junction, General Hospital, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Iconic Roles and Lasting Impact

Lockhart gained particular fame for her portrayal of the loving mother on Lassie, beginning in 1958. From 1965 to 1968, she starred as the matriarch of a family of space explorers in Lost in Space. Her influence was evident, as she recalled in a 2004 interview with NPR that viewers often expressed how the series inspired them to pursue careers in science, a sentiment she did not encounter during her time on Lassie.

Throughout her career, Lockhart received recognition for her work, including two Emmy nominations, one of which was for best actress in a leading role in a dramatic series for her work on Lassie. She was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for her contributions to film and another for television.

In 2021, Lockhart made a voice cameo in the Netflix reboot of Lost in Space, showcasing her enduring presence in the industry.

Lockhart married John F. Maloney in 1951, and the couple had two daughters, Anne and June Elizabeth, before their divorce in 1959.

Funeral services for the actress will be held privately. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Actors Fund, ProPublica, and International Hearing Dog Inc. in her memory.
