Everton Eyes January Move for Defender Charlie Cresswell
Everton is reportedly preparing to make an offer for defender Charlie Cresswell during the January transfer window. The 23-year-old, who played a crucial role in England’s U21 European Championship victory this past summer, has emerged as a target for several clubs, including Everton, Manchester City, Newcastle, and West Ham. With defensive struggles and injuries impacting the team, securing a new centre-back has become a pressing priority for Everton.
The club has actively scouted Cresswell, attending two of his recent matches in October, where he played for Toulouse in Ligue 1. Cresswell has been a standout performer, featuring in every minute of the current league campaign and contributing three goals in 11 appearances. Everton’s representatives observed him during a 4-0 victory against Metz and a 2-2 draw with Rennes.
David Moyes, Everton’s manager, is keen to bolster his defensive options as injuries to Jarrad Branthwaite have left the squad short on depth. Branthwaite’s ongoing issues have highlighted the need for a reliable partner in the backline, making Cresswell a fitting candidate to join the team for the second half of the season. Having previously played alongside Branthwaite for the England U21s, their familiarity could enhance the team’s cohesion.
Reports indicate that Everton is willing to offer an immediate starting position to Cresswell to entice him to the club. However, Toulouse is unlikely to accept any bids below £26.4 million for their rising star, despite earlier indications that a lower offer might be considered. Everton’s interest in Cresswell reflects their commitment to strengthening the squad and addressing defensive vulnerabilities.
Cresswell’s potential transfer is seen as a sound investment, considering his youth and the promise he has shown early in his career. A move to Everton could provide him with the platform to further develop while also addressing the club’s pressing need for defensive reinforcements. As the January transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on how this situation unfolds, particularly for Everton as they seek to enhance their squad for a more competitive second half of the season.
