Stigma Persists as Men Hesitate to Seek Mental Health Support
Research highlights a significant reluctance among men in the UK to seek professional help for mental health issues. A recent poll indicated that nearly a quarter of men would “never” consider professional support, even during challenging times. This survey, which involved 2,000 adults, revealed that while 40% have tried therapy or counselling, approximately 20% remain firmly opposed to it.
Among those hesitant to seek help, 13% believe they should handle their problems independently. An additional 11% express doubt about the effectiveness of therapy for them. Interestingly, of the men who have previously attended therapy, 21% have stopped, with 11% citing a belief that therapy is not suited for men. Furthermore, 10% of respondents reported discomfort in discussing their feelings.
Deep-Rooted Stigmas Affecting Help-Seeking Behavior
Richard Whitenstall, a qualified therapist from BetterHelp, which commissioned the research, noted that “stigmas around mental health remain deep-rooted, especially among men, where asking for help is often seen as a sign of weakness.” He emphasized that many men tend to give therapy just “one shot.” If their initial experience does not yield positive results, they often abandon the search for support altogether.
Data from the study also revealed that 19% of men who have tried counselling would hesitate to share this information with friends. Men are reportedly six times more likely than women to believe their peers would mock them for attending therapy. Despite these challenges, the survey showed some encouraging trends; half of the men who have experienced therapy expressed a willingness to try it again, with a noticeable increase in openness towards online therapy options.
Interestingly, men are twice as likely as women to consider video therapy as an alternative. Yet, among those who discontinued their sessions, 12% cited a previous negative experience, while 20% felt that their therapist did not understand their situation adequately. Additionally, a quarter of respondents mentioned feeling anxious prior to their appointments, which contributed to their reluctance to continue.
Exploring Alternative Mental Health Support
Whitenstall pointed out that past experiences can significantly impact an individual’s readiness to seek professional help again. He stressed the importance of recognizing the variety of support available, as “one size most certainly does not fit all.” He suggested that online therapy could provide a more approachable entry point for men hesitant about traditional therapy formats, making the process feel less intimidating.
As mental health awareness continues to grow, addressing the persistent stigma surrounding men’s mental health becomes increasingly critical. The findings from this poll underscore the need for initiatives that promote open conversations about emotional well-being, encouraging men to seek the help they need without fear of judgment.
Overall, the data reflects a complex landscape in which many men remain cautious about pursuing mental health support, highlighting the ongoing work required to shift perceptions and foster a culture of openness and acceptance.
