Recent weeks have posed significant challenges for the Saundersfoot Medical Centre due to a surge in winter illnesses and rising Covid-19 infections. In response, local county councillors are taking proactive steps to address patient access issues. A meeting is scheduled for December 10, 2023, aimed at discussing these challenges and collaborating on practical solutions.

Councillors Chris Williams and Alec Cormack have expressed their commitment to supporting the medical centre. “As councillors, we have received numerous emails from local residents expressing their concerns,” stated Cllr Williams. He acknowledged that the surgery has been under considerable pressure, particularly with the early onset of winter illnesses this year.

To tackle these issues, the surgery has implemented several improvements to facilitate easier access to appointments. Recent upgrades to the computer system now enable patients to book more same-day appointments online starting from 07:45 each day. The number of pre-bookable online appointments has also been increased threefold, with plans to introduce the ability to book appointments via telephone by the end of November.

In addition to these enhancements, the surgery is reintroducing telephone triage. This system will allow staff to assess the urgency of patient calls and direct them to the most appropriate care options. Cllr Williams noted, “While these steps are intended to reduce the morning rush and improve efficiency, we recognize that some patients are still finding it difficult to secure appointments.”

The upcoming meeting will focus on these ongoing concerns to ensure that the needs of local residents are adequately represented. The surgery is also reminding patients about the Common Ailments Scheme, which is available through local pharmacies, including Saundersfoot Pharmacy. This scheme provides advice and treatment for a range of minor illnesses, allowing patients to seek care without the need for a GP appointment.

As winter progresses, the collaboration between the medical centre and local councillors aims to enhance healthcare access for the community, ensuring that residents receive timely and effective medical care during this challenging period.
