Croatian Fans Attacked on Route to Montenegro Football Match

A group of Croatian football fans was attacked while traveling on the main road between Cetinje and Budva on the evening of September 23, 2023. The incident, which occurred in the small locality of Ugnji, involved an unidentified group that obstructed the fans’ vehicles. Reports indicate that the attackers used rods to smash windows and mirrors of the cars.

This violent episode has raised concerns ahead of a crucial football match between the national teams of Montenegro and Croatia, scheduled for September 24 at 20:45 local time. In response to potential risks associated with the match, the Police Administration has announced a series of preventive measures aimed at ensuring public order and safety both at the stadium and in the city center.

The match has been classified as a high-risk event by the Football Association of Montenegro. Consequently, police officials have conducted several meetings with relevant authorities and established a command center to oversee the event’s security. A sufficient number of police officers will be deployed at key locations around the stadium and in areas where fan movements are anticipated.

Authorities are implementing measures to control the flow of fans at border crossings, ensuring that the arrival and departure of visiting supporters are managed effectively. According to Croatian media, fans received instructions from both Croatian and Montenegrin police regarding their movements in the city on match day.
