Indie Readery & Records Opens in Downtown Pittsfield, Revives Book Culture
The newly established Indie Readery & Records opened its doors on October 23, 2023, at 314 North Street in downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This vibrant 600-square-foot storefront offers a diverse selection of new and used books, vinyl records, and an assortment of unique gifts and organic personal care products. The shop aims to create a welcoming space that emphasizes social justice and inclusivity.
Emma and Laurie Lenski, the couple behind the venture, emphasize the importance of providing a platform for underrepresented voices. “It’s very eclectic, and we have a wide variety of voices and products represented,” Emma explained. The store particularly focuses on liberal and progressive viewpoints, striving to serve communities often overlooked by mainstream culture.
Community Engagement and Artistic Showcase
Indie Readery & Records features a gallery section that will host local artists in rotating three-month exhibitions. “The artists will keep all of the profits from these,” Emma noted. The store plans to organize various events, including author readings, book signings, open mics, poetry slams, drag story times, and movie screenings, fostering a sense of community engagement.
The shop’s interior is bright and inviting, with dedicated sections for children’s literature and music albums. A unique “refillery” area, created in collaboration with North Adams-based Plant Connector, allows customers to fill their own containers with organic cleaning and personal care products. “There’s been a lot of interest in that,” Emma remarked, highlighting the store’s commitment to sustainability.
Laurie and Emma, who have been a couple for twelve years, decided to pursue this business venture early in 2023. They secured a lease in May and spent the summer transforming the space, which was previously a hair salon. Laurie, with twenty-five years of experience in home renovation, works full-time at the store, while Emma balances her responsibilities as the director of education and outreach at Berkshire Pride and as a licensed therapist at Collaborative Endeavors.
Revitalizing Pittsfield’s Downtown
The idea for Indie Readery & Records stemmed from Laurie’s desire for a career change. “After being a painter for so many years, I decided it was time to do something else that would be less physical,” she said. After exploring various business ideas, the couple recognized a significant need for an independent bookstore in downtown Pittsfield. “That seemed right for several reasons,” Laurie explained.
Emma’s background as a book lover also influenced their decision. “Everyone should have access to a cozy bookstore where they can curl up with a good book,” she said. They noted that other communities in Berkshire County boast great independent bookstores, and they saw an opportunity to fill that gap in Pittsfield.
Laurie expressed optimism about the potential for revitalizing the downtown area, recalling fond memories of shopping trips with her mother during the community’s heyday. “We want to be part of bringing that vitality back,” she stated, highlighting a shared vision with other local business owners.
In a world increasingly dominated by digital media, both owners believe there is a resurgence of interest in traditional formats. “Although we’re living in a digital age, I’m getting tired of that and want to live a more analog life,” Laurie reflected. “I think many others feel the same way.” Their perspective resonates with the community, as customers have shown enthusiasm and support since the store’s opening.
Indie Readery & Records operates Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, inviting all to experience a rich blend of literature, music, and community spirit.
