Montenegro Summons Russian Ambassador Over Inappropriate Remarks

The Russian Ambassador to Montenegro, Aleksander Lukašik, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 17, 2025, following his recent statements deemed inappropriate by Montenegrin officials. These remarks, made after Montenegro’s Parliament adopted a resolution to join the NATO mechanism for providing security assistance and training for Ukraine, have sparked significant diplomatic tensions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed that Lukašik’s comments represent a clear example of unacceptable interference in Montenegro’s internal affairs. The ambassador criticized an interview given by Montenegro’s President Jakov Milatović to the French newspaper La Croix, which evidently contributed to the decision to call him for discussion.

Montenegro’s officials stated that such actions and criticisms are completely unacceptable. They emphasized that Montenegro will not allow anyone to undermine the dignity of its institutions.

In the meeting with Lukašik, it was made clear that future similar communications would be viewed as deliberate hostile actions. The Ministry signaled that it would respond adequately, in accordance with international standards. The expectation was communicated that the Russian Embassy must fully respect Montenegro’s institutions and officials.

Montenegro’s foreign policy is guided by its own national and strategic interests, which include NATO membership and dedication to the EU accession process. The Ministry reaffirmed that it does not operate under the directives of any foreign entity.
