Cambridge Professor Reveals Unique Technique to Open Jars
A mathematics professor at Cambridge University has shared an unconventional method for opening tightly sealed jars that requires no physical strength. In a recent TikTok video, Hannah Fry explained a technique that leverages the body’s natural mechanics, suggesting that “brains over brawn” can be the key to overcoming stubborn lids.
Fry introduced her method by addressing a common frustration: jars that seem impossible to open. “There is actually a scientifically legitimate trick here that means you will never have to struggle again,” she stated, while demonstrating her technique. The core of her advice is to “forcibly breathe out” as you twist the jar lid.
The science behind this approach lies in the body’s stability and support. Fry emphasized that when attempting to open a jar, the arm often struggles to maintain balance. “Your arm is this floppy little noodle that’s lolling around all over the place,” she noted. To counter this, taking a deep breath and holding it can increase internal pressure, effectively turning the torso into a solid base.
According to Fry, this method is similar to techniques used by weightlifters. She explained that engaging the body’s core muscles—specifically the internal obliques and transverse abdominis—during a forced exhale can enhance stability and power. This engagement allows energy to be focused on the twisting motion required to open a jar.
In her video, Fry provided a visual aid, referencing a skeletal diagram to illustrate how the body’s mechanics come into play. “When you’re opening a jar, you are creating this twisting motion, which has to be countered by your shoulder and your spine,” she explained. The forced exhale, she added, primes the body and locks the base of support, allowing for a more effective effort.
Viewers have responded positively to Fry’s demonstration. One user expressed excitement, stating, “I always do the breathe out method and it really works. Now I know the reason that’s cool.” Another highlighted the connection between proper breathing techniques and stability in weightlifting, mentioning the use of lifting belts for enhanced support.
This breathing technique, known as Valsalva breathing, is not only applicable to jar opening but is also commonly used in various sports, including tennis. Athletes are often taught to exhale during a shot, further illustrating the broad applicability of Fry’s insights.
