Ruben Amorim Faces Wing-Back Crisis Ahead of Africa Cup of Nations

Ruben Amorim is confronting a challenging situation at Manchester United as he prepares for a potential shortage of wing-back options. With the Africa Cup of Nations set to commence next month, Amorim could find himself without key players, significantly impacting his squad depth.

Currently, Amad Diallo stands out as a reliable candidate for the right wing-back position. Amorim described Diallo as the “perfect” option for that role. In contrast, the left wing-back position lacks similar assurance, with the club’s recent acquisition, Patrick Dorgu, struggling to demonstrate the consistency required for a starting role. Although United invested £25 million to secure Dorgu, he remains an unrefined talent, while Diogo Dalot offers a safer, albeit more limited, option on the right.

The situation becomes more complicated with the impending departures of several wing-backs for national duty. Alongside Diallo, both Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui are set to join their respective national teams, leaving Amorim with only Dalot, Dorgu, and the less favored Tyrell Malacia as senior options.

Dorgu faces a precarious situation, as a single booking could lead to a one-match suspension, which would further deplete Amorim’s options. This leaves Dalot as the only experienced wing-back available, creating a significant challenge for the coach. The absence of key players during crucial matches could hinder United’s performance and strategic flexibility.

Amorim is exploring potential reinforcements for the wing-back positions as part of a broader rebuild at Manchester United. The club’s management recognizes the need for immediate improvements, but any changes will have to wait until the transfer window opens.

In light of the current circumstances, Amorim may have to consider unconventional solutions. While there is some discussion about fielding young talents such as Diego Leon, who is expected to leave on loan, there is also the possibility of deploying Luke Shaw in a left wing-back role. Shaw has enjoyed a resurgence as a center-back this season and could be a temporary fix in a more advanced position.

Amorim acknowledged Shaw’s versatility, stating, “He can play left wing-back, but of course the load that a player does in that position is a little different if you are doing that on a daily basis. He is more prepared to do that position, but of course, he can play there; he is a smart player, and he is fit in the moment, so I think he is an option.”

Despite the potential of Shaw stepping into this role, Amorim appears hesitant due to the player’s previous fitness concerns. The next month could see significant adjustments to the squad as Manchester United navigates these pressing challenges. As the club aims to strengthen its roster, the future of its wing-back positions remains uncertain.
