Louis Saha Urges Manchester United to Sign Danny Welbeck
Louis Saha, a former star of Manchester United, has urged his old club to acquire a “very experienced” striker when the January transfer window opens. His recommendation comes in light of the current squad’s limited depth at the forward position, particularly in the wake of Benjamin Sesko‘s knee injury, which has sidelined the young striker after a promising start to the season.
United secured Sesko, 22, last summer in a deal worth £74 million with RB Leipzig. Since joining the club, he has contributed two goals and one assist across 12 appearances. Yet, Saha notes that the team lacks sufficient competition for the No. 9 role, with Matheus Cunha more comfortable playing behind the centre-forward and Joshua Zirkzee still adjusting to his place in the squad.
Saha, now 47, believes that Manchester United should consider re-signing Danny Welbeck, who has found renewed form at Brighton & Hove Albion. The 35-year-old forward has already scored seven goals and provided one assist in 14 matches this season. Saha cites Welbeck’s experience and efficiency as crucial qualities that could enhance United’s attacking options.
Depth and Competition Key to Success
During his tenure at Manchester United from 2004 to 2008, Saha experienced the advantage of having a deep squad filled with talented players. He recalls the presence of forwards like Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as well as Carlos Tevez and Alan Smith, which fostered a competitive atmosphere that benefitted all players.
Saha expressed that Welbeck’s return would not only bolster the squad but also be instrumental in the development of younger players like Sesko. He stated, “Welbeck’s experience would give an example for them to all learn from, and I think if Danny arrives in the winter transfer window, he could make a huge difference to results on the pitch.”
Saha’s comments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Manchester United as they look to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window. The club’s current position may require them to act decisively if they wish to compete effectively in the remainder of the season.
