Montenegrin Duo Launches Electropop EP Inspired by Villanelle
A new musical project has emerged from the coastal town of Bar in Montenegro, drawing inspiration from a complex historical narrative. Project Villanelle, a collaboration between director and musician Nemanja Bečanović and journalist and author Željko Milović, has released an EP titled “5+1”. This work features five songs and an additional track that ties the project together, echoing themes of identity and transformation.
The name “Villanelle” references a notorious figure from the Basque Country, Idoja Lopez Rianjo, known as “La Tigresa.” She was a prominent member of the separatist group ETA in the 1980s, infamous for her involvement in politically motivated killings. Her story—marked by violence, imprisonment, and eventual redemption—serves as a backdrop to the duo’s exploration of darker themes within their music.
Musical Influences and Style
The EP “5+1” showcases a sound reminiscent of early 1980s electropop, produced using Bečanović’s vintage synthesizers. The mixing and mastering were handled by Stefan Pantović at the “Stivi” studio, where the entire project was recorded. Milović, who has been active in the Montenegrin music scene since the 1980s, wrote and performed all the tracks.
The lead track, “Umoran,” captures a sense of longing and introspection, with lyrics that resonate deeply: “Pomiluj mene, more… I kući vrati me.” This line reflects a sailor’s desire to return home, evoking a poignant image that resonates with many. The song “Signali” complements this narrative, symbolizing the signals from the lone lighthouse of Mendra, offering hope to sailors navigating the Adriatic Sea.
Milović’s poetic prowess shines through in the lyrics, which convey a sophisticated understanding of both personal and collective experiences. This artistic depth is evident in the opening track, “Pogledaj,” which features a haunting melody reminiscent of the Manchester music scene, drawing comparisons to bands like New Order and Joy Division.
Exploring Themes of Identity
One of the standout elements of the EP is its ability to weave complex themes into a cohesive soundscape. The track “Uspavanka,” a tribute to the musician Đorđe Balašević, diverges stylistically, showcasing Milović’s versatility. Following this, the titular track “Villanelle” and “Prozirna” delve into the idea of a haunting feminine figure, echoing the sentiments of Rianjo’s life story.
“5+1” does not shy away from portraying the duality of existence—the interplay of darkness and light, fear and hope. The songs serve as a metaphorical exploration of the Montenegrin spirit, capturing both the serene beauty of the Adriatic coast and the tumultuous history of the region.
As listeners engage with this new work, they are invited to reflect on their own journeys. The music acts as a bridge between past and present, connecting the local culture to broader themes of resilience and transformation.
In summary, Project Villanelle’s “5+1” is a compelling entry into the modern Montenegrin music scene. With its rich narratives and evocative sound, it stands as a testament to the power of art in navigating complex human experiences. The EP has been well-received, earning a rating of 4/5, and it promises to resonate with audiences both locally and internationally.
