Nigeria Secures Seat on IMO Council, Boosting Maritime Presence
President Bola Tinubu has announced Nigeria’s election to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2026–2027 biennium. This election, held during the IMO’s General Assembly on November 28, 2023, marks Nigeria’s return to the Council after a 14-year absence, affirming the nation’s growing influence in maritime governance.
In a statement released on Saturday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu highlighted that Nigeria’s re-election to Category C of the IMO Council reflects the international community’s confidence in the country’s commitment to safety, security, and environmental stewardship in maritime operations. He emphasized that this election is a testament to Nigeria’s constructive role in global shipping governance.
Strengthening Maritime Infrastructure
Tinubu commended several key figures for their efforts in achieving this milestone. He specifically praised Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, alongside the staff of the Ministry and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). Their dedication and professionalism throughout the election process played a significant role in securing Nigeria’s position on the IMO Council.
The President noted that this new mandate is aligned with his administration’s objectives to unlock Nigeria’s blue economy, enhance maritime infrastructure, and strengthen anti-piracy initiatives. He conveyed Nigeria’s aspiration to improve its status as a regional shipping hub, fostering safer seas and cleaner oceans.
As part of his commitment, Tinubu assured the global maritime community of Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate. He expressed a desire to promote efficiency in maritime transport systems and to champion innovation and fairness in global maritime regulation.
Acknowledging International Support
In conclusion, President Tinubu extended his gratitude to the member states for their support during the election. He pledged that Nigeria would justify the trust placed in it through sustained leadership and active contributions to advancing international maritime objectives. The President’s remarks highlight a renewed focus on Nigeria’s role in shaping maritime governance on a global scale, promising a future of enhanced collaboration and development in the sector.
