Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski recently discussed the enduring impact and varied interpretations of her 1999 film The Matrix during an episode of the podcast “So True with Caleb Hearon.” The film has sparked extensive dialogue around subjects such as technology, artificial intelligence, and issues of gender identity and conformity. Over the years, it has attracted a diverse audience, each viewing it through their unique lens.

A specific scene in the film, where the character Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, chooses between a blue pill that represents a return to normalcy and a red pill that symbolizes awakening to reality, has drawn particular attention. Recently, this moment has been appropriated by the American MAGA movement, prompting Wachowski to reflect on how her work is interpreted outside her original intentions.

In her candid remarks, Wachowski expressed her struggle with how various ideologies have misinterpreted the film. She stated, “You have to let go of your work. People are gonna interpret it however they interpret it.” Wachowski acknowledged the existence of “crazy, mutant theories” that have emerged around The Matrix and admitted her frustration with some of these interpretations.

She elaborated on the tendency of right-wing ideology to appropriate and distort various viewpoints. “They appropriate left-wing points of view and they mutate them for their own propaganda,” she said. “This is what fascism does… They take these ideas that are generally acknowledged as questions or investigations about humanity and life and they turn them to something else.” This perspective underscores her belief that the integrity of the film’s original message can become obscured in the hands of those who reinterpret it for their own agendas.

After completing the original trilogy, Lilly Wachowski stepped away from the franchise, allowing her sister, Lana Wachowski, to independently create The Matrix Resurrections. Currently, Drew Goddard is set to develop a new installment with neither of the Wachowski sisters involved.

In addition to her reflections on The Matrix, Lilly Wachowski is also involved in the upcoming comedy film Trash Mountain, which features a script by Rubey Caster and Caleb Hearon. Although she was initially slated to direct the project, circumstances led to changes in direction. Despite this, she remains engaged as an executive producer, collaborating with Kris Swanberg, known for directing “I Used to Go Here.”

Wachowski’s insights into the appropriation of her work highlight the broader implications of how media can be reshaped by various cultural movements. As the conversation continues around The Matrix, it serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between creators and their art in a rapidly evolving social landscape.
