Belfast Retailer Hails Reduced Congestion Ahead of Christmas

A Belfast retailer has expressed optimism regarding improved city centre conditions as the Christmas shopping season approaches. Chris Suitor, who has operated his tailoring business, Suitor Bros Clothiers and Custom Tailors, on Arthur Street for decades, noted significant progress in reducing congestion compared to last year’s severe traffic issues.

In 2022, Belfast experienced major disruptions, particularly during the evening rush hour, which Suitor described as if “someone threw a hand grenade” at the city. The traffic chaos stemmed from various construction projects, including work related to the new Grand Central Station and a major resurfacing scheme of the A2 Sydenham Bypass.

This year, Suitor commended the efforts made by Stormont, particularly by the Department for Infrastructure and Translink, in addressing the congestion. He highlighted several initiatives that contributed to the improved situation, including the extension of a moratorium on roadworks leading up to the festive season and the reopening of Durham Street.

Positive Changes Enhance Shopping Experience

Speaking to Belfast Live, Suitor remarked, “This year has definitely kicked off on a better keel than last year regarding congestion.” He pointed out that the reopening of Durham Street has significantly eased traffic flow. The earlier implementation of the moratorium on roadworks, which began two weeks earlier than in 2022, has also positively impacted commuter experiences.

While Suitor acknowledges that there is still work to be done to enhance the city’s public transport services, he noted that retailers feel more informed this year compared to last. “Last year, part of our issue was the Department kind of just buried its head in the sand and left retailers hung out to dry,” he said. “This year we feel a lot more informed.”

Despite ongoing challenges, Suitor reported an increase in footfall in the city centre as the Christmas season approaches. He believes that improved access, along with positive public relations surrounding the reopening of roads and bus lanes, has bolstered consumer confidence.

Calls for Continued Investment in Public Transport

Suitor urged for continued investment in Northern Ireland’s public transport system, stating that addressing issues such as bus and train punctuality is essential for maintaining public trust. He described the year-long pilot scheme for late-night transport as a potential “gamechanger” and encouraged people to take advantage of this service.

“We need to embrace the business community to bring more investment, which will allow us to invest in our public sector, health service, education system, and transport,” Suitor explained. He emphasized the importance of improving public transport to encourage more visitors to Belfast and enhance the overall shopping experience.

As the festive season progresses, Suitor remains hopeful for a successful Christmas period. “There’s definitely a buzz around the city at the minute,” he said, underscoring the importance of continued efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure and public transport systems. He concluded by stating, “I think it’s a gamechanger for the city, and we should be happy about that, but we do need to get behind it.”

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, the city of Belfast is showing signs of recovery, and local retailers are optimistic about the potential for increased trade.
