Russia Maps 23 UK Defence Sites as Potential Missile Targets

Tensions between Russia and the United Kingdom escalated recently as Russian Senator and war veteran Dmitry Rogozin shared a map identifying 23 British defence-related sites. This development raises fears of potential missile strikes, intensifying concerns about the possibility of global conflict. The locations highlighted include military and industrial targets across all four nations of the UK.

The warning from Rogozin followed comments made by former British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who suggested that Ukraine should focus on making Crimea “uninhabitable” for Russia. Wallace stated in October, “We must help Ukraine acquire long-range capabilities to make Crimea uninhabitable. We need to strangle Crimea.” In response, Rogozin implied that such rhetoric could justify targeting these UK sites, stating, “What a sober minister has in mind, a former one has on his tongue.”

Rogozin’s remarks illustrate the heightened rhetoric surrounding military actions. The map he posted, sourced from the UK government’s policy paper “Defence Industrial Strategy 2025: Making Defence an Engine for Growth,” underscores the strategic importance of these sites in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The Russian media has also added to these tensions. TV propagandist Vladimir Solovyov threatened retaliation against the UK and disparaged Wallace, referring to him as “a piece of s*** who lost his job.” Solovyov went further, suggesting that the underwater nuclear drone Poseidon could be unleashed on Britain, claiming, “But when the unfortunate Brits die, they should say your name.”

This escalation in threats comes on the heels of a previous warning from Russian state television about a potential terrorist operation targeting the wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery, a World War II ship containing approximately 1,400 tonnes of explosives. The shipwreck, which lies in the Thames Estuary, could pose a significant risk if disturbed, with experts warning that any explosion could severely impact coastal communities.

Dr. Andrey Sidorov, a historian, explained the dangers associated with the wreck, asserting, “If you hit it, this will flood all the coastal villages and ports. So we need to start with that, right today.” His comments reflect the ongoing concerns regarding the implications of military actions and the potential for catastrophic consequences.

In light of these developments, the relationship between Russia and the UK appears increasingly precarious. The mapping of UK defence sites by a high-ranking Russian official signals a troubling escalation of hostilities, drawing attention to the broader implications for global security. The situation underscores the need for continued vigilance and dialogue to avert further conflict.
