Split Triumphs Over SC Derbi 102-94 in Thrilling Overtime Clash
In a gripping encounter, Split edged out SC Derbi 102-94 after overtime in the 16th round of Group A in the ABA League on March 11, 2024. The match showcased a dramatic turn of events, reflecting two distinct phases of play that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
SC Derbi faced a daunting challenge early on, falling behind by as much as 19 points in the second quarter. Despite trailing 77-64 with just six minutes remaining in regulation, the Podgorica-based team fought back to force overtime at 85-85. However, Split regained control during the extra period, showcasing their strength and resilience.
Petar Mijović, head coach of SC Derbi, acknowledged Split’s well-deserved victory. “The match had two completely different flows. We entered the first quarter inadequately, with a soft defensive approach, which allowed Split to score easily and find their shooting rhythm,” he said. Mijović emphasized the importance of their improved performance in the second quarter, stating, “Although we were still behind, we established a standard of play that was crucial for the continuation of the match.”
Reflecting on the latter part of the game, Mijović expressed satisfaction with his team’s increased intensity. “In the second half, we played significantly tougher and more aggressively. We hit some shots during our comeback, and there was good defense, particularly on the perimeter. Early points from Jordan set the tone for overtime, giving Split the confidence needed to seal the game in the final minutes.”
On the other side, Split’s head coach, Dino Repeša, shared his satisfaction with his team’s performance. “Once again, we started the match well, as we did in the previous three. Our game plan was executed effectively in both directions,” he noted. However, he lamented the points conceded, particularly from pick-and-roll plays, a recurring issue for the team this season.
Repeša pointed out that despite holding a significant lead, nerves crept into their performance after some fouls. “In the end, we won deservedly. It was a similar match to our game against Igokea, where we led, then faced a tie, and ultimately secured the win. It’s not easy to win two consecutive games, but the team demonstrated mental strength, and this victory restored our confidence,” he added.
The coach also praised the crowd’s support, saying, “By the end, the audience was energized, and I wish it could always be like that.” He highlighted the standout performance of Jordan, who not only scored 32 points but also contributed significantly on defense. Repeša commended his other players as well, including Zoki Dražić and Vigins, for their roles in controlling the game.
This victory for Split not only boosts their standing in the ABA League but also serves as a testament to their ability to withstand pressure and come out on top in critical moments. As both teams look ahead, the lessons learned from this match will undoubtedly influence their strategies in upcoming games.
