Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Chef Nicola Owen at 41
The community of Pontardawe is in mourning following the untimely passing of Nicola Owen, a beloved head chef at Pontardawe Rugby Club, who died at the age of 41 on January 22. Described as “beautiful inside and out,” Nicola is remembered for the warmth and kindness she brought to her role, as well as to the lives of those around her.
Nicola had recently been diagnosed with cancer, a battle she faced with remarkable courage. She is survived by her 18-year-old son, Charlie, her partner Mal Jones, and her mother Sian. The news of her passing prompted an outpouring of grief from the community, with the rugby club sharing the heartbreaking announcement on social media.
Tributes Pour In for a Cherished Figure
In their tribute, Pontardawe Rugby Club expressed their sorrow, stating, “Nicola was the heart of our kitchen and a huge part of our club’s soul.” They highlighted her dedication, saying she infused “passion, care, and love into everything she did.” The club emphasized that her impact extended beyond her culinary skills, touching the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
The heartfelt message continued, noting, “Beautiful inside and out, she had a warmth and kindness that will never be forgotten.” The absence of Nicola will leave a significant void at the club, which announced that the café would remain closed for the day to allow her friends and colleagues time to grieve and reflect on her life.
The club extended their condolences to Nicola’s family, stating, “Our kitchen and our club will never be the same. Nicola has left a massive hole in our hearts, and her absence will be felt every single day.” They concluded with a touching farewell: “Rest in peace, Nicola. You will always be part of us.”
Final Farewell and Community Support
Nicola’s funeral is scheduled for February 11. The service will take place at St Peter’s Church in Pontardawe, followed by interment at Coedgwilym Cemetery in Clydach. For those unable to attend, Nicola will make her final journey past familiar landmarks, including The Castle pub and the rugby club.
In a poignant gesture, all women attending the funeral are encouraged to wear a splash of color, reflecting the vibrant spirit that Nicola exuded throughout her life.
As the community comes together to honor Nicola Owen’s legacy, her impact will undoubtedly be felt for years to come. The tributes serve as a testament to a life lived with passion and dedication, leaving behind cherished memories for all who knew her.
