Hamilton Town Centre to Receive £20 Million for Regeneration

Hamilton town centre is poised to receive a significant investment of £20 million as part of a UK Government-funded initiative aimed at revitalising areas with high levels of deprivation. This funding comes from the Pride of Place programme, which focuses on enhancing social infrastructure and empowering local communities to shape their futures.

The South Lanarkshire Council has confirmed that this investment will be distributed over a ten-year period. The council’s commitment is to engage residents directly in the allocation of funds, ensuring that the local community has a voice in the regeneration process. This approach aims to foster stronger connections within the community, create vibrant public spaces, and support various local projects.

Community Engagement and Governance

During a recent Executive Committee meeting, council members discussed the next steps in the funding process. A key component will be the establishment of a Hamilton Town Centre Neighbourhood Board, which will consist of residents, community organisations, and business representatives. To lead this board, an independent chair will be appointed by March 31, 2026. The final selection will involve consultation with Imogen Walker, the local Member of Parliament, and the council’s chief executive.

Once formed, the board will represent the community’s interests and will be tasked with determining the priority projects for the investment. The board is expected to be fully operational by July 2026, engaging with the community throughout the year to gather input on potential initiatives.

Future Planning and Funding Allocation

Following its establishment, the neighbourhood board will be responsible for crafting a detailed plan to be submitted to the UK Government by November 2026. This plan will outline a ten-year vision for Hamilton town centre, specifying how the initial funding will be allocated during the first four years. Approval for the project is anticipated in spring 2027, with funding expected to commence in the 2027/28 fiscal year.

The £20 million investment will be divided between capital projects and ongoing operational expenses, supplementing the £8 million already earmarked for Hamilton town centre in the council’s 2025/26 budget. It is important to note that funding beyond 2028/29 will depend on future UK spending reviews.

This initiative represents a substantial commitment to enhancing Hamilton’s socio-economic landscape, supporting community-driven development, and addressing the challenges faced by residents in the area.
