A woman has been discovered deceased near the historic Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, just one day after a couple tragically fell to their deaths in the same area. Police responded to reports of the woman’s body at approximately 12:53 PM on Thursday, July 31, 2023, following a notification from a member of the public.

The earlier incident occurred on Wednesday evening when emergency services were alerted around 7:15 PM after a passerby spotted the couple on the rocks below the cliff. The coastguard quickly coordinated a helicopter recovery, completing the operation just before 8:30 PM. Unfortunately, paramedics pronounced both individuals dead at the scene.

Authorities have stated that the woman’s death is not considered suspicious and is not linked to the couple’s fall, which is currently being investigated as a possible double suicide. The North Yorkshire Police are working diligently to trace the next of kin for the deceased couple while preparing a report for the coroner.

Investigation Underway

Witnesses reported that the couple had been walking along the cliff path, engaging with other hikers before they reportedly bypassed a safety fence and approached the cliff edge. Eyewitness accounts suggest that they fell shortly after. A police spokesperson confirmed, “Emergency service teams have been involved in the recovery of two bodies from beneath the cliff at Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening.”

The area surrounding the historic 7th-century Abbey was bustling with activity as preparations for a vintage steam engine rally were underway. The Abbey itself is renowned for its connection to the gothic novel “Dracula,” written by Irish author Bram Stoker, who took inspiration from the picturesque landscape during his stay in the town.
