UK Government Offers Up to £12,471 for Eligible Veterans

The UK Government is providing financial support through the War Pension Scheme (WPS), which offers annual payments of up to £12,471 to eligible individuals who served in the British Armed Forces. This compensation is aimed at those who have suffered illnesses, conditions, or injuries as a result of their service before 6 April 2005.

This initiative is available not only to members of the British Army but also to personnel from the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Coastguard service, and Nursing service. Individuals who meet the eligibility criteria can qualify for one of two types of WPS payments, determined by their level of ‘disablement’ assessed by a medical advisor. This disablement score ranges from 1% to 100%, with a higher percentage indicating a more severe condition.

Understanding the Compensation Structure

For those with a disablement rating below 20%, the scheme provides a tax-free lump sum. In contrast, individuals with a disablement rating exceeding 20% receive ongoing tax-free payments, which can be distributed either weekly or monthly. The compensation encompasses both physical and mental health conditions.

It is important to note that specific conditions, such as Noise-Induced Sensorineural Hearing Loss with a disablement rating under 20%, do not qualify for ongoing payments or lump sums. According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Veterans UK, “The rules of the scheme and the value of the payments awarded are set by Parliament. The value of the payments increases each year in line with the consumer price index.”

Furthermore, the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme is available for injuries, illnesses, or deaths resulting from service on or after 6 April 2005. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published a detailed list of War Pension rates that will remain valid until March 2026. Recent statistics indicate that the complete rate for the Disablement Pension has reached £12,471 per year, reflecting an increase of £209 since 2024.

How to Apply for the War Pension Scheme

Applicants must provide specific details as part of their submission. According to guidance from Devon Live, if the individual named in the application has ever served with the United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF), whether directly or in a support role, they need to contact the MoD A Block Disclosure Cell prior to making a claim. This may involve applying for Express Prior Authority in Writing (EPAW) and obtaining a reference number for the claim process.
