Shetland Athletes Shine but Face Tough Matches in Weekend Sports

In a weekend filled with competitive spirit, two Shetlanders made their mark in football, while local bowlers showcased their skills at the Clocktower ladies day event. The sporting action spanned various leagues, highlighting both triumphs and challenges for athletes from the region.
Football Highlights: Golspie and Brechin City Perform
On Saturday, Henry Oldbury served as captain for Golspie Sutherland in their match against Fort William, although the team faced a challenging defeat, losing 3-0. Oldbury, a goalkeeper, led the team alongside fellow former Spurs player Brandon McKay, who started in midfield. This match followed a promising start to the season for Golspie, who previously secured a 2-1 victory over St Duthus on August 16.
In another match within the Highland League, Spencer Moreland played a late substitute role for Brechin City, who continued their strong performance with a decisive 5-0 win against Buckie Thistle. This victory marks Brechin’s sixth consecutive win, placing them three points ahead of Brora Rangers at the top of the league table.
Looking ahead, Spurs are set to compete in the Ocean Kinetics Premier League against town rivals Thistle. A win would position Spurs three points clear of Whitedale, with both teams currently tied at the top of the standings. Should both teams win their remaining fixtures, a playoff may be necessary to determine the champions.
Local Events: Clocktower Ladies Day and Rugby Season Kickoff
This weekend also featured the Clocktower Ladies Day at the Lerwick Outdoor Bowling Club, where 16 participants enjoyed a round-robin tournament in the Hong Kong pairs format. Despite a cloudy start, the weather cleared, allowing for a vibrant day of competition. After all matches were completed, the team of Sarah Polson and Debs Morgan emerged victorious, while Caroline Smith and Angela Gifford secured second place based on shot differences. Gift vouchers were awarded to the top teams by Clocktower owner Brian Smith.
In rugby, Shetland’s men’s team is gearing up for their season opener against Mackie on August 30. Meanwhile, the Shetland Valkyries will kick off their campaign at home against Highland the following week, marking the start of an exciting season for local rugby enthusiasts.
This weekend’s sports events reflect the dedication and talent of Shetland’s athletes, showcasing both their achievements and the competitive nature of their respective leagues.
