USMNT Prepares for World Cup with Key Player Performances

As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) players are making headlines across Europe. With only 295 days until the tournament begins, several players are positioning themselves to secure spots on the final roster. Notable performances have come from players like Josh Sargent, who has started the season strong, while questions loom over Weston McKennie‘s future at Juventus.
In the early weeks of the European club season, Sargent has stood out, netting three goals for Norwich City and asserting himself as a key player. His impressive form could influence Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT coach, as he shapes his squad. Meanwhile, Christian Pulisic has shifted focus back to his on-field performance after a turbulent summer, scoring in AC Milan‘s 2-0 victory over Bari in the Coppa Italia. This marks a positive start for Pulisic, who has faced scrutiny for his decisions and past injuries.
Player Performances and Their Implications
While Sargent and Pulisic are making headlines for the right reasons, Johnny Cardoso is also drawing attention. In his debut for Atlético Madrid, Cardoso played well but was substituted at halftime, which left many questioning the decision. Despite being taken off, his performance was commendable, having completed 87.5% of his passes and winning over 71.4% of his duels. Manager Diego Simeone acknowledged the need to reassess his substitution choices, indicating that Cardoso may have a future role in the squad.
In contrast, McKennie’s situation at Juventus raises concerns. He has yet to feature in any matches this season, a stark change from last year’s total of 48 league and cup appearances. His limited playing time during preseason matches has led to speculation about his role in the upcoming season. With Juventus adopting a 3-4-3 formation, McKennie’s opportunities seem to be dwindling, and rumors suggest he may be heading to AS Roma. The lack of consistent playing time could hinder his preparation for the World Cup, which is critical for maintaining fitness and form.
In-Form XI and Future Prospects
As the USMNT approaches its final squad selection, Pochettino faces the challenge of identifying a starting lineup. With injuries affecting players like Antonee Robinson and Caleb Wiley, Pochettino has numerous options to consider. Joe Scally, a steady presence at Borussia Mönchengladbach, could fill the void but may not align with Pochettino’s preference for attacking outside backs.
The competition for spots intensifies with players like Max Arfsten from Columbus Crew and John Tolkin from Holstein Kiel stepping up. Both have shown promise, with Tolkin starting the season strong after scoring in the DFB-Pokal. Meanwhile, Tim Weah is adapting to his role as a wing-back at Marseille, showcasing his versatility.
As the USMNT continues its preparations, the upcoming matches in the September window will be crucial. They will provide a clearer picture of which players are in form and ready to compete at the World Cup level. With all eyes on the players and their performances, the USMNT’s path to the home World Cup is becoming increasingly dynamic and engaging.
