Highland Council Faces Backlash Over Roundabout Redesign Mistakes

Highland Council has come under scrutiny after a rushed redesign of the Inshes Roundabout led to confusion among drivers. Following complaints about the new layout, the council announced on March 15, 2024, that it would temporarily close one of the lanes leading to the roundabout. This decision came just hours after officials insisted that no changes were necessary.
The recently resurfaced roundabout had been completed just days earlier, but the new lane markings merged three lanes into two, causing significant traffic issues. Local residents and motorists expressed their frustration, with some taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Comments ranged from disbelief over the council’s handling of the situation to calls for accountability regarding the contractors responsible for the markings.
Local politician Shaun Fraser, representing the Scottish Labour party for Inverness and Nairn, highlighted the pressing issue of road congestion exacerbated by tourist traffic, particularly from motorhomes. He argued that while tourism is vital to the Highland economy, it must not disrupt the daily lives of residents. Fraser urged the Scottish Government to consider a visitor levy that includes motorhomes, which he believes could help maintain local infrastructure and alleviate some of the strain on rural roads.
Fraser pointed out that current regulations mean motorhomes are exempt from visitor levies if parked outside registered campsites, which he argues encourages unregulated roadside parking. “A well-designed visitor levy would balance the needs of visitors and locals,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive policies in maintaining the Highlands’ charm and accessibility.
As the council navigates these challenges, it faces mounting pressure to rectify the roundabout situation and improve traffic management. Residents have expressed concerns that without proper oversight, such mistakes could recur, highlighting the need for a thorough risk assessment before implementing changes.
Comments from the public reveal a mix of incredulity and frustration. One resident remarked, “Got to love Highland Clowncil,” while another questioned who was responsible for approving the previous markings. The situation has sparked a broader conversation about the effectiveness of local governance and its ability to adapt to the increasing demands of tourism and traffic management.
The Highland Council’s rapid response to the roundabout issue reflects a growing awareness of the need for better planning and communication, especially as tourism continues to play a pivotal role in the regional economy. As discussions around visitor levies and road safety continue, the council will need to demonstrate its commitment to both residents and visitors alike.
In the meantime, the Scots Guards Association is actively seeking to recruit former members to bolster its local branch. The group invites ex-Scots Guardsmen and others to reconnect with their military roots through monthly meetings and events across the Highlands, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
As Highland Council addresses these pressing issues, the ongoing dialogue about the balance between tourism and local life will remain crucial for the region’s future.
