											Luxury fashion brands Gucci, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen have fallen victim to a significant cyber attack, potentially affecting millions of customers. The breach was confirmed by Kering, the French parent company of these brands, which revealed that an unauthorized third party gained temporary access to its systems in June 2023. While Kering did not specifically name the affected brands in its statement, it acknowledged that limited customer data had been accessed.
The compromised data reportedly includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, and the total sums spent at the brands’ stores. Notably, Kering emphasized that no sensitive financial information, such as credit card or bank account numbers, was compromised during the breach. According to the BBC, the hackers, who identified themselves as “Shiny Hunters“, claim to possess data linked to approximately 7.4 million unique email addresses.
Response and Investigation
In response to the breach, Kering’s brands promptly reported the incident to relevant authorities and notified affected customers in accordance with local regulations. However, the company has not disclosed which countries may have been impacted by the attack. This incident is part of a broader trend affecting luxury brands and retailers this year, as several high-profile breaches have been reported.
Other recent incidents include attacks on Richemont’s Cartier and various brands under the LVMH umbrella. In July 2023, Hong Kong’s privacy watchdog announced an investigation into a data leak affecting around 419,000 customers at LVMH’s Louis Vuitton. The growing number of breaches in the luxury sector raises concerns about cybersecurity measures and the protection of customer information.

The implications of these data breaches extend beyond immediate customer privacy concerns.
