Chiefs Struggle in 0-2 Start, Mahomes Reduced to Game Manager

The Kansas City Chiefs have begun their season with an unexpected 0-2 record, marking the first time they have faced such a start since their playoff-less campaign in 2014. This is also the first time that quarterback Patrick Mahomes has encountered a losing streak at this stage in his career. As the Chiefs face mounting pressure, questions arise about the future of a franchise that has reached five of the last six Super Bowls, winning three championships.
On the latest episode of the Inside The Huddle Podcast, analysts Neil Reynolds and Phoebe Schecter discussed the challenges facing the Chiefs, attributing their struggles to a lack of offensive weapons available to Mahomes. “They’ve turned Mahomes into the biggest, most famous and most expensive ‘game manager’ ever,” Reynolds stated. He emphasized that the limitations of the roster are forcing Mahomes to rely on short passes and scrambling rather than executing his dynamic style of play.
Reynolds posed a thought-provoking scenario: “If we took the names off the back of the jerseys and put them in a neutral color, you’d be impressed with the quarterback, but you’d be like, ‘I don’t believe in that team.'” Despite their past successes, the current performance raises concerns about the Chiefs’ ability to compete this season.
The absence of key players has also contributed to the team’s offensive woes. The Chiefs are missing Xavier Worthy, who is sidelined due to injury, and Rashee Rice, who is currently suspended. These absences highlight the need for the team to find reliable targets for Mahomes, particularly as they have not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Tyreek Hill departed in 2021.
Hill, who now plays for the Miami Dolphins, is experiencing difficulties of his own, as his team has started the season 0-3. In the past, he expressed a desire to leave the Dolphins following their failure to reach the playoffs last year, but he has since retracted those comments. Schecter suggested that Hill might be open to a return to Kansas City, stating, “I think Tyreek would be up for that, to be honest with you. He wants to get the ball and be with a quarterback who understands his skill set.”
The Chiefs’ offensive struggles are evident, particularly in their performance on third down, a statistic that was once a strength for the team. Schecter remarked on the current situation, saying, “You honestly look at this team and think, ‘Who do we go to?’ I couldn’t tell you.” She highlighted that Travis Kelce, a key player, did not perform at his best in the recent loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which included an uncharacteristic interception in the red zone.
Looking ahead, the Chiefs may need to make strategic decisions before the trade deadline on November 4. The addition of a player like Hill could potentially revitalize an offense that is currently relying heavily on Mahomes. Schecter concluded her analysis by expressing her concerns, stating, “Normally, Andy Reid is so creative, but I don’t trust anybody on that offense right now, apart from Mahomes, to be creative and to make something happen.”
As the Chiefs navigate this challenging period, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if they can turn their season around and re-establish themselves as a dominant force in the NFL.
