A significant cannabis operation valued at £1.8 million was discovered in two newly constructed homes in Fen Drayton, England. The operation, which involved the cultivation of 1,856 cannabis plants, was uncovered by police on January 7, 2023, following tips from local residents expressing concerns about suspicious activities in the area.

During their investigation, officers from Cambridgeshire Police entered the five-bedroom properties on Mill Road. Inside, they found the extensive cannabis growing operation spread across 19 different rooms. Authorities seized various items including growing equipment, cash, and mobile phones, which further indicated the scale of the illegal enterprise.

In a dramatic turn of events, four men were apprehended in connection with the operation. Thao Hoang, aged 44, and Nam Nguyen, 21, were discovered hiding in a cupboard on the top floor of one of the houses. Meanwhile, Ban Hoang, 50, and Phao Nguyen, 39, attempted to flee the property but were caught after jumping a fence into the nearby village.

All four individuals were charged with the production of cannabis, with Hoang and Hoang pleading guilty. Following a trial, Nguyen and Phao Nguyen were also found guilty. On July 25, 2023, at Peterborough Crown Court, each of the men received a sentence of 13 months in prison.

Detective Constable Kieran Wickens, who led the investigation, praised the community for their vigilance. He stated, “Thanks to information received and our own investigation, we were able to shut down this cannabis factory. We can’t be everywhere and we rely on people in communities being our eyes and ears. If you suspect something isn’t right, it more than likely isn’t.”

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating illegal drug production in residential areas. With the community’s active participation, police aim to disrupt similar operations and maintain safety in local neighborhoods.

The discovery of this cannabis factory serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and cooperation with law enforcement to address crime effectively.
