Gen Z and Millennials Swap Bacon for Avocado in Breakfast Shift

The traditional full English breakfast faces a significant transformation as younger generations increasingly replace bacon and sausages with healthier options like avocado and spinach. A recent survey conducted by OnePoll involving 2,000 adults reveals that over half of Millennials (53%) and nearly half of Gen Z (49%) are moving away from animal products in their meals.
This shift in dietary preferences highlights a growing trend towards plant-based ingredients. The consumption of items like avocados, salad leaves, and plant-based sausages has risen notably compared to five years ago. Particularly striking is the increase in spinach consumption among Gen Z, which has grown by 10% since 2020. In contrast, bacon consumption has decreased by 10% among meat-loving Baby Boomers.
According to a spokesperson from Just Egg, a plant-based egg alternative brand that commissioned the research ahead of its UK launch, the landscape of breakfast and brunch is evolving. The spokesperson noted, “It’s clear the traditional breakfast and brunch landscape is being reshaped with the trend towards more plant-based foods. With old classics such as bacon and eggs hitting a downtrend – and plant power on the rise.”
Despite the changes, the full English breakfast remains a beloved staple. A significant 62% of respondents indicate they are making a conscious effort to create healthier versions of this classic dish. Furthermore, 35% of the population now incorporates more plant-based ingredients into their cooked breakfasts compared to five years ago.
As many as 41% of individuals admit to occasionally swapping out traditional ingredients like eggs or bacon for plant-based alternatives. Notably, 38% of participants have committed at least half of their plates to plant-based foods. Motivations for this shift include health concerns, with 25% reducing their intake of animal products for overall health, 18% citing animal welfare, and 15% aiming to minimize their environmental impact.
The survey also highlights the most commonly swapped ingredients, with 16% of respondents replacing sausages and 10% opting for plant-based alternatives to eggs. Interestingly, one-third of participants expressed willingness to try plant-based egg substitutes in the future. Key factors influencing this consideration include recommendations from healthcare professionals (19%) and concerns regarding cholesterol levels (15%).
The spokesperson from Just Egg further emphasized that the transition towards plant-based foods is driven by various health priorities, including the desire to lower saturated fat and increase fiber intake. “But people are also realizing that they don’t have to sacrifice on taste – or cut out the full English fry-up – to eat healthier,” they added.
As the culinary landscape continues to evolve, it is evident that while traditional breakfasts may be adapting, they will not disappear. Instead, they are likely to reflect the changing tastes and priorities of a new generation focused on health and sustainability.
