Audience Disapproves of Minister’s Speech at “Jagoš Marković” Festival Opening
The inaugural edition of the “Jagoš Marković” International Festival officially commenced at the Cultural Centre “Budo Tomović” on December 1, 2023, and will run until December 6. Despite the excitement surrounding the festival, which sold tickets in record time, the opening night was marked by significant audience discontent.
During the opening ceremony, the Minister of Culture and Media, Tamara Vujović, delivered a speech that was met with loud boos and whistles from the audience. Attendees expressed their dissatisfaction not only towards Vujović but also directed their criticism at other officials present, including the Vice President Jakov Milatović and Mayor Saša Mujović, as well as the President of the Assembly of the Capital City Jelena Borovinić Bojović and Deputy Mayor Nađa Ljiljanić.
The festival, which showcases six performances from Montenegro and the surrounding region, celebrates the work of one of the area’s most significant directors, Jagoš Marković. The opening night featured the performance of “Ćelava pjevačica” (The Bald Soprano), the last production directed by Marković, produced by the Tivat Cultural Centre.
Despite the initial uproar, the festival aims to highlight the importance of theatrical arts in the region. Marković, known for his innovative approaches, has garnered a reputation for pushing creative boundaries, and this festival serves as a platform for both established and emerging talents.
As the opening night unfolded, it became clear that the festival’s atmosphere was tinged with tension, underscoring the complexities of cultural expression within the current political landscape. The audience’s reaction reflects broader sentiments that may influence the festival’s reception as it progresses through the week.
With performances scheduled daily until December 6, the “Jagoš Marković” International Festival promises to be a focal point for discussions around culture, artistry, and political expression in Montenegro.
