Drew Sanders has opened a new bookstore, Western Massachusetts Graphic Novels, in Great Barrington, specializing in both new and used comic books and graphic novels. Located at 152 Main Street, this venture marks the latest iteration of a retail space that has served various purposes since the mid-1970s. The store officially opened its doors on May 24, 2025, aiming to provide a comprehensive selection that caters to both children and adults.

Sanders, who grew up in Great Barrington, has spent the last two decades immersing himself in the comic book culture of major cities like New York and Los Angeles. His journey began in 2007 as a vendor of children’s books, where he curated selections outside on the streets of Manhattan. Over time, his passion for comic books blossomed, leading him to trade traditional children’s books for graphic novels, a format he believes offers unique storytelling opportunities.

Curating a Diverse Collection

The bookstore features an extensive collection, highlighting both popular titles and independent works. Sanders states, “I decided to open up a bookstore for kids and adults specializing in trade paperbacks and series from Image and DC Comics, as well as independent graphic novels from major publishers.” Among the offerings are two dedicated shelves of manga, which Sanders anticipates will expand further in the coming years.

The store aims to cater to various reading levels and interests, with a significant focus on middle-grade readers and preteens. This includes a wide array of nonfiction and fiction titles from notable publishers such as First Second, Graphix, and Random House. Sanders emphasizes the visual appeal of graphic novels, stating, “I look first for the illustrations. If the writing is also good, I’ll buy it.”

Sanders also recognizes the enduring popularity of classic literature, offering full-color reprints of titles from the 1960s through the 1980s. He notes that many parents and families return to find cherished books from their youth, which they can now share with the next generation.

According to a 2023 survey by the National Literacy Trust, children who read graphic novels for pleasure are nearly twice as likely to enjoy reading overall compared to those who do not engage with the format.
